Oli-La-Poutine 39
I had the pleasure to follow Team Brigade's activity in the S84 JST. For my first assignement as part of the formerly named VHLM Illustrated's writing team, I met every GM involved in the tournament. GM @jacobcarson877 give me such a rich interview I've decided to treasure it away from the b̶u̶t̶c̶h̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ editing team. As promised, here lie the integral version of our discussion. Oli: First of all, congratulations on your back to back championship, what a stunning performance! Would you mind answering some question regarding the tournament? Jacob: i'd love to! Also, thank you Oli: First can you tell us about your experience as GM so far? Jacob: I love GMing. When I first joined the league it was the VHLM GMs that really stood out to me in the community. The people I've looked up to in the last 2+ years have been VHLM GMs at one point or another. As I started my journey with my latest player, Landon Wolanin, I found myself taking on an active leadership role on my teams, and so I figured if I had this passion and the time/energy to use on it, I should pursue becoming a GM! I got a season of AGMing under my belt under the mentorship of @Frank, and he encouraged me to try to find a GM position for myself! I took a job with the JST and the WJC that offseason and when Frank got promoted to Vancouver, it only made sense for me to fill his shoes back in San Diego. I had a blast this season in San Diego, but the JST was truly miraculous for me. To return to my role with the Brigade this offseason and get the opportunity to draft and meet so many VHLM draft-eligible players was a blessing. Not to mention we were pretty damn good too. I hope to bring a lot of what I've learned and how it felt to win back to San Diego for the upcoming season, and hopefully some of the players from that championship winning team too. Its a bit soon to say for sure, but I would love to make a return to the Brigade next time around as well, both as part of my passion for new members and as a tool for drafting for the Marlins. Oli: You managed to win back to back championship withing the JST, which is, quite a feat. What is your secret recipe? Jacob: I did come into this second tournament with a bit of an upper hand having known most of the prospects and how to use the sim to my advantage. But honestly I just wanted to put together a team that earned well, that had great attitudes and the drive to win. I was also very active on the waiver wire, carving out roles for new players as they came in, to replace the ones that weren't active. We only played the best of the best, and we were all rewarded with wins when it mattered most. Oli: You already mention you wished to bring back some Brigades player to San Diego with you, will you drop some names? Jacob: With not a lot of picks in this upcoming draft it'll be best for me to keep some of the names a secret but I think I made it pretty clear during the tournament who I thought had the potential to be a star, and tried to give them the best opportunity to showcase it to the other GMs. I know a lot of GMs watch it rather closely often steal the players I've laid claim to in my head. Any one of my Brigade are welcome to join the Marlins, and probably have an edge over other players at their TPE because of the previous relationship formed. Really excited to see who I can get my hands on, and sad already knowing some will be snagged from my grasp by smart GMs. Oli: Do you want to say something to your players to be published in the VHLMI? For word counting purpose: Just remember the beauty of the VHL isn't the flashy goals you'll score or the dramatic saves, even the bone-crunching hits! The beauty of the VHL is truly the friends you made along the way. Find ways to stay connected. Watch for them on the scoresheets, say hi when you see them around the league. We won't remember games, seasons and sometimes even entire careers at the end of the day, but we will always remember our friends. It has been a pleasure to get to know you all, and I hope to see your names on the scoresheets for many seasons to come!
