U.S. men's hockey a victim of own unrealized expectations - Los Angeles Times

Mid-Season Check-in: Saskatoon Wild

The Saskatoon Wild have finally played through the first half of the season. Although they’ve been playing decent hockey as of late, it’s time they finally take it up a notch if they want to go far this season. But that isn’t to downplay some of the heroics we have seen on the Saskatoon roster so far. This Saskatoon team has some amazing, underrated talent that both VHLE and VHL teams should pick up on, today we’ll go ahead and present some of the many stars on this team.

G - Alexander Minion

Minion has been an absolute stud for the Saskatoon Wild. Being the biggest reason why Saskatoon has been able to become a team in the hunt. Minion has led the VHLM in numerous goalie categories, such as save percentage, wins and funny enough, assists.

C - Nick Trash

Nick Trash has been one of our only centers on the Wild this season, meaning a lot of playing time for the young center. He sure hasn’t disappointed so far, with a 45 point total and a 50.5 faceoff percentage, he has proven that he can stick with the big guys.

RW - Mats Zuccarello

Zuccarello has been undoubtedly one of the greatest offensive minds the Saskatoon offense has to offer. Zuccarello came up with the Saskatoon Wild after being picked up in the 7th round and he hasn’t looked back. Since then, Zuccarello is named 4th overall in the VHLM in points with 65 and has kept on improving his game. Zuccarello has for sure exceeded the expectations of many.

LW - Oli McGee

Oli is crowned point leader of the Saskatoon Wild so far, fiercely battling it out with Zuccarello. McGee is named second in points with 67, only behind Houston’s The Mediocre One. McGee has been the prime reason why Saskatoon’s goal totals are as high as it is. He has has remarkable season so far, we can only look forward to see what Oli has in store for us in the second half!

RW - Leonard Triller

Last but not least, Leonard Triller. He has been able to make an immediate impact after joining the Saskatoon Wild on waivers. He was able to find his footing fairly quickly in the VHLM, averaging over more than a point per game. Triller has been a vital depth piece that was imperative for Saskatoon’s success.

The Saskatoon Wild have already made tremendous leaps from last year. Already tying their regular season point total from last year with only thirty nine games played. Coming into the season, Saskatoon was nothing but a push over, since then Saskatoon has been able to become much more than that. Being slotted 2nd in the Western Conference, the Wild team has a lot to be proud of so far. The only question is, can they keep their momentum going to finish out the season strong? There is really no distinct answer to this question, all we can really do is wait and see how this team performs as the second half of the season starts.
