"I am Rick Sportsman here with VHLM Hockey News Magazine with an exclusive interview with the Houston Bulls newest nondrafted waiver signing, Thomas Matthews, Right Wing #12. You really came out of the blue and no one has ever heard of you. How do you think you got to this level without ever being noticed?" RS

"Hey Rick thanks for having me. I think I got noticed when my best friend Edward Traverse and I were on a team together in the Ontario Hockey League. We just clicked. We made a deep playoff run together. We got so close to the cup but lost in game 7 double overtime. I believe scouts scouted him and I during the playoffs because we both got contracts around the same time after the cup run to join the VHLM." TM

"Can you tell us a bit about your background, so you are from Canada?" RS

"Yes I am from Ottawa Canada. I played hockey as a hobby from age 6 to my early teens. I never really thought I would get this far with it. I think once my dad died 3 years ago, when I was 15 years old, I started to take the sport seriously since it was the only thing that I had left to remember him by. Hockey is what my dad and I bonded over with together. He was a huge Toronto Legion fan and we had season tickets every year. After he passed all I could focus on was hockey and I think that's what helped advanced the progress in my development." TM

"Yes. I See here you were signed to the Houston Bulls. Your first game with the Bulls was game 157. You guys have only won 1 game in 5 since you joined. You only got one assist in those games. Are you bad luck for the locker room? or is there more to the story?" RS

"No, (laughs) , that's ridiculous. We had a very tough schedule against the Las Vegas Aces. We played against them 4 times. They are one of the best teams in the league, which by the way, is who my friend Edward signed with. We just didn't produce enough offense and our defense fell apart quickly. I wouldn't blame one person for this losing streak. It's a team game. We just need to focus harder and practice more together. I am still trying to figure out the chemistry with my line mates." TM

"Do you see yourself competing harder now since Edward is playing for your conference rival team? I am sure you have a lot to prove on your own." RS

"Yeah I have a lot to prove. To myself and to my teammates. It's not easy going into a locker room and you have no idea how the team atmosphere is. Or if the veterans will take you under their wing. For now all I can focus on is my game. I need to keep developing my skills consistently and focus on what can I do to help this team reach the next level." TM

"Did you always play Right Wing in your career?" RS

"That's a great question. Most of my hockey career I played Left Wing but the coach in the OHL switched me to RW and my game has developed much quicker since."

"Would you change positions again if asked by your coach?" RS

"Of course, as long as I am a forward. I am here to help my teammates win. I am a rookie and I am not picky where they would need me. But from what I've seen from myself in the OHL, I am better at Right wing." TM

"Thanks for your time Thomas Matthews from the Houston Bulls, I appreciate you being here with us. This is Rick Sportsman with VHLM Hockey news, reporting." RS

"No Problem, thank you." TM

Since the end of this interview the Houston Bulls will win only 1 game in the next 3 but Matthews will go on to score a goal and get an assist. Not bad for a rookie.
