Phil 5,120
Phil Strasmore's Scouting Report User: Phil Height: 6'2" Weight: 215lbs Drafted VHLm: 4th Overall (S84) Phil Strasmore was drafted 4th overall in the Season 84 draft by the San Diego Marlins. This was not a complete shock, as the player comes with a player agent who is famous for getting the best out of his players. The only reason it was a little surprising, is the fact that Strasmore was a former NFL player who was injured to the point of retirement. It also explains why he is one of the oldest players in his draft class. He is now 24 years old. Phil was picked up on waivers in Season 83 by the Mississauga Hounds. He played the remaining 12 games of the regular season, managing 12 points, 13 hits, and 8 shots blocked. He helped them out in the playoffs, although they did not get passed the first round. Still, he managed 7 points in the 6 games. As previously mentioned, that off-season, Strasmore was selected 4th overall. He played 29 games for the Marlins before the General Manager succumbed to the pressure and decided to trade off his players to rebuild for the future. In those 29 games he showed some offensivey-minded habits, getting 32 points, but more impressively, taking 73 victims of his hits and blocking 77 shots. He was dealt to Houston, where he played the rest of his VHLM career. Again, he was proving to be just over a point-per-game defenseman, with 46 points in his 42 games and collecting 85 hits and 58 shots blocked on the defensive end. Eventually the Bulls lost a Game 7 heart-breaker, but Strasmore still managed a health 12 points and 17 hits. His VHLm Career wasn't brilliant but definitely showed enough to peak the interested of VHLe and VHL General Managers. Unfortunately for the VHLe, Strasmore had make it abundantly clear that given his age, he wanted to skip right into the VHL, if the league had use for him. Below are a look at his VHLm stats: Now we are going to evaluate his career with a few pros and cons to his game: Cons: Discipline Because he has such a huge frame, he very often under estimates his power and strength. Sometimes he goes into the boards too hard, or accesses his football rage and takes a silly penalty. He will need to keep and eye and a handle on this throughout his career to keep himself out of the penalty box Defense It's a weird con for a defensman, but looking at his plus/minus from his VHLm days, he has been at the point end more often than not of opponents' offensive blades. He needs to figure out a way to tighten up his defensive attributes. Goal Scoring Although not his main focus, he should be able to contribute more than he was in terms of scoring goals. With such a huge frame, teams will look to him for having a powerful slap-shot that can decimate teams. Pros: Physicality Obviously this would be the first pro. The man is huge and will put the fear of God into anyone stepping foot over the blue line. He is working on using his body to lean into hits so he doesn't break opponents' necks. Playmaking Strasmore is a pass-first defensman. He has the strength to shrug off hits so he has more time than most to get his head up and look around. Using his athletic IQ, he can usually make the right play and create a decent goal scoring opportunity. Special Units Strasmore is a force on the penalty kill and powerplay. He is the size of two smaller guys so when he's killing a penalty, it's like the team is at even strength anyway. On the powerplay, I know we've talked about goal-scoring being an issue, but his record on the powerplay is actually quite good with over half his goals (15 of 28) coming with the man advantage. If he can exploit this, he will be very dangerous in the VHL. 690 Words like the keener I am.
