Finnish Goalie Jere Huhtamaa Commits To Merrimack College

Dalkr Vidarsson playing in a Greenland Youth Hockey Association (GYHA) game.

Dalkr Vidarsson was born in the small town of Tasiilaq, Greenland. From an early age, he idolized the great hockey players of nearby Canada, watching VHL greats compete on the ice and win championships. Coming from a pour family, it was hard to pursue the dream of playing in the VHL. To help make money to afford goalie gear and youth hockey fees, Dalkr spent time on his mother's fishing boat, Morning Starlight. It was here that Dalkr first learned to be quick with his hands and positioning, helping the crew wrangle in the fishing nets and moving quickly to avoid being hurt on the deck of the boat. It might not have been a luxurious childhood, living mostly on fishing boats or around fish markets and villages, but it was the life Dalkr knew and loved. It kept him sharp with his senses, able with his body and mind, and tough for hockey. There wasn't anywhere else he would dream of being in his life, for Greenland was home.

When Dalkr Vidarsson first put on goalie pads, he showed he was a natural at the position. In his early days, he would rack up insane stat lines until he was finally directed to join the Greenland Youth Hockey Association. Because of his level of play, members of the GYHA felt he was ready to push up into the more premier leagues available for hockey players in Greenland. Upon his first couple of seasons in the youth hockey league in Greenland, coaches began to notice the elite level of play Vidarsson already possessed. They pushed him to train and work hard alongside the rest of the elites emerging from Greenland at the time, players like Leif Reingaard and Thor Reingaard. He was a big player for his age and continued to grow in that retrospect to the other youth hockey players in Greenland. From his time on the fishing boat - combined with his continued desire to become better in practice - Dalkr began to get quicker on the ice and excel in body positioning, agility, and rebound control. However, Dalkr was just a tad bit behind in development regarding the emerging wave of Greenlanders in the hockey scene. He knew he could be great, but no one seemed to notice.

Dalkr tried his best, working harder and harder. But many teams simply never noticed him. He felt out of place while other players received the attention in the VHLM, watching as teams eyed the other Greenlander prospects. He continued to play in the GYHA, pushing out his best season as of recent with a stat line of a .936 SV% along with 11 SO and 2.21 GA. Seemingly, though, it was not enough to draw onlookers. While the rest of the great prospects began to prepare for their future in the VHLM, Dalkr ended this past season with uncertainty. He headed home, still determined to be great, but knowing that his time may not come just yet. While at home, helping still with the fishing boats, Dalkr began to realize he needed to decide what he wanted to do. Faced with the decision of trying to declare for the VHLM draft in S91 or S92, Dalkr was at a crossroads that could define his hockey career. He could declare now and join an already crowded draft class or wait for S92 and remain behind for another season. The Great Greenland Generation was already reported on and published, but Dalkr was not mentioned. The scouts were hailing the S91 draft class as world class, led by those greenland prospects mentioned before, but no one made note of Vidarsson. That is, until Dalkr had a chance to make a decision. With the help of his youth coaches, Dalkr submitted his name for the S91 draft class at an abnormal time, seeing if anyone would notice. Agents pushed out notifications that "Dalkr Vidarsson is primed and ready, eagerly awaiting to be scouted!" But no one seemed to see it.

However, 2 days before the S91 VHLM draft, the AGM of the Miami Marauders finally broke the silence and reached out to Vidarsson to discuss his play and what he was wanting to do. They were surprised as well that Dalkr did qualify for the VHLM draft, as they were reaching out about simply joining the team due to Dalkr's unique timeline. This was the push Dalkr needed - he now knew someone had noticed him. He was getting scouted. With the VHLM draft fast approaching, Dalkr works harder than ever to prove himself and to show that a great franchise goalie can come out of the forgotten country of Greenland. While he may not go in the first round, teams would be hard pressed to skip over what could be one of Greenland's greatest goaltenders in the VHL.
