some recruitment stuff that nobody ever asked me to write about

Recommended Posts

I guess it took too long to discuss how bad or good recruitment team has been so far. In my humble opinion, they could have done much better but I have never been in charge of recruiting and I do not really realise how I would work as a recruiter.  But as long as VHL needs the community sharing some ideas how to bring new blood here I'll drop a few notes how I see it from my point of view.

CHANGE THE TEAM

The first thing comes to my mind is hiring some new but experienced stuff to deal with the problem. There is no need to blame Moon and every guy who is related to the current recruitment team. Shit happens and it is pretty obvious that sometimes you can't cope with some problems probably because you have no idea how to do that or because you are not good enough to be in charge of such a responsible job that have a crucial impact on eco-system of the VHL. And don't get me wrong, I am not a hater but if you see that something doesn't work properly you will have to act and do something that will positively effect. I would say changing the recruitment squad is the last thing I would do if I were Victor or whoever makes the decision about that. Seeing 3 teams with holes in their roster squad is the wake-up call for evrerybody who cares about VHL.

NEW MARKET

I fully regret that VHL has no popularity beyond the Nothern America. I joined VHL two and a half years ago and reflecting on my experience I have met one dude from Russia here ( hey boost!). Using foreign forums to recruit is not that complicated with the help of online translator. In Russia we have no counterparts of VHL and I am pretty sure there are English-speaking countries in Europe where we can recruit hockey fans. VHL is the one and only and we must take advantage of that from all over the world. For sure, language barier would make it more complicated for new guys to get everything clear but GM's are here to make it easier for new comers to grow. With the current roster problems in the VHLM trying to move abroad along the Net is not a bad idea at all. At least we should try.

MENTORS AND LOCKER ROOM

I was not here when mentors were a thing but I see them as a solution to the problem. Constantly having a guy who is always ready to talk to me and give some piece of advice is a key if I were a first gen player. Again, in my humble opinion, GMs (only some of them) didn't do their job well. Example :  here. Some vital parts of teaching and communicating with players were missed by some of them (GMs) and now it is what it is. It is implied that GM will be a guy who will direct you to the goal : VHL Hall of Fame, records or whatever it is. And I was pretty lucky to be under the leadership of Muff, Dlamb and Kaleeb. They are all champion material and VHL needs to find responsible, respectable and reliable mentors as they (Muff, Dlamb and Kaleeb) are. Also I would recommend commisionners to take a look at conditions of locker rooms along every team. I was a member of one where there were no any messages for 3 days from GM and this stuff repeated almost every week during the whole season. As I said, communication is key and If GM doesn't devote his time amd dedicate himself to the team every day he is not worth being in charge.
