A comparison of the season 84 Draft All Stars expectation to the season 92 career conclusion results

Recommended Posts

Theme Week for season 2 is about All-Stars and I can think of no better way to evaluate all stars than to do a comparison of a season's draft and who were the expected all-stars against how they ended. As season 84 will be retiring this year and it also happens to be the season my player, Molly the Cat was drafted it only seems natural to look at that season's draft class.

Let’s start by looking at the Draft Class of Season 84, we will focus on the first round as those should be considered the top all-star Prospects. You can see the draft list on this link.  Note I tried to copy it but it caused a file size error.  S84 VHL Entry Draft (vhlportal.com)

The first thing to note about this draft class is that they are back end heavy, in fact the first overall pick is a goalie and 7 of the top 10 picks are either Defenders or Goalies with only Napolean Dynamite (pick 2), Dogwoodmaple (pick 7 and Tyler Busser (pick 9) being forwards, and to note all of them were Centers. The first winger wasn’t chosen until pick 12 when Molly the Cat was chosen by London.

Based on the Draft if you were going to put together a first line All-star team it would look as follows:

Goalie: Art Vandelay

Defense: Callum Murray and Cobalt Burns

Forwards: Napoleon Dynamite, Dogwoodmaple and Tyler Busser

I must note that Goalie Clueless Wallob, and Defense, Pierre Emile Bouchard, and Scoish Velociraptor Maloish would have been in conversations for their respective positions.

Now let us jump to season 92 where all these players are within games of completing their careers. Much has happened in the lives of these players and as expected the outcome is not what the draft predicted. There were some spot-on picks, and there were some duds, and there were some huge draft steals.

If we were to look at putting together an all-star season 84 team now, looking back over all the seasons there would be some definite changes in the line-up.

Players being placed in the various positions will be evaluated on 3 criteria, first will be TPA achieved, second will be TPE achieved and lastly performance.

Goalie:

The discussion for Goalie comes down to the same 2 candidates as at the draft and the reality is that an argument could be made for either candidate.

Art Vandelay (TPA 905, TPE 1810, performance 295 wins, career .925 SV%, 2.5 GAA with 2 personal awards)

Clueless Wallob (TPA 915, TPE 1475, performance 261 wins, career .926 SV%, 2.69 GAA, 2 Victory Cups and 2 personal Awards)

Art Vandelay has better TPE and regular season career stats, Clueless Wallob has better TPA and more personal achievements.

Defense:

The choices for defense on the season 84 all-star team based on career information are significantly clearer than the choice for Goalie. There are only 3 candidates:

Pierre Emie Bouchard (TPA 1084, TPE 1939, performance, 145 goals, 490 assists, 635 points)

Velociraptor Greg (TPA 985, TPE 1506, performance, 1020 goals, 323 assists, 425 points)

Scoish Velociraptor Maloish (TPA 732, TPE 1492, Performance, 117goals, 382 assists, 499 points)

A couple points of interest, first Velociraptor Greg was not even drafted in the first round and is now in contention for one of the 2 defense spots. None of these players were the first 2 defenders chosen in the draft.

Forwards:

The forward category is remarkably similar to the defense where there are a limited number of options based on career statistics.

Molly the Cat (TPA 1337, TPE 1904, performance, Goals 291, Assists 295, points 586)

AK92 Wit da Hoodie (TPA 1229, TPE 1755, performance, goals 198, assists 352, points 550)* we must make a note that this player started their career as a defender and switched positions mid-career

Napolean Dynamite (TPA 1004, TPE 1745, performance, goals 241, assists 308, points 549)

Dogwood Maple (TPA 964, TPE 1517, performance, goals 236, Assists 337, Points 573)

So in conclusion I would choose the following as he Season 84 All-Star team, although I can see the rationale behind some different choices.

Goalie: Art Vandelay

Defense: Pierre Emile Bouchard and Scoish Velociraptor Maloish

Forwards: Molly the Cat, Napolean Dynamite and Dogwood Maple
