Guntis Gavilrovs is a monster defenseman who is about to make his VHL debut for the Vancouver Wolves in season 93. After putting together a phenomenal minor league career in Houston and Stockholm there is a ton of hype and expectations surrounding the behemoth blueliner when he hits the ice for Vancouver in S93.

Minor League Career

Gavilrovs started his minor league career in Houston in the VHLM after being drafted 12th overall in Season 91. He quickly became a fan favorite with his play style, throwing thunderous checks and hammering home slapshot goals from the blue line. The goal in his first season was to make a name for himself with his elite physical shutdown play, which he did, but his offense game developed much quicker than everyone expected. Gavilrovs lead the VHLM in goals by a defenseman with 27 in S91 and racked up 70 points in the process along with 187 hits and 78 blocks. An exceptional season for the big Latvian as he was one of the top defenseman in the entire VHLM and prospective GM's in the next level VHLE took notice.

Guntis was then drafted 3rd overall in the Season 92 VHLE draft to the Stockholm Vikings, who obviously were impressed with his play in the VHLM and knew they had to get him to lead their blue line. Gavilrovs not only led their blue line but he led the entire league in numerous categories while helping Stockholm to a strong season and 3rd place finish. Gavilrovs led all defenseman in points with an incredible 78 and the entire league in assists with 61. He also led the league in hits with 295, penalty minutes with 204 and was among the top in shots blocked with 184. Once again he was a physical force while adding high offense, which surprised even himself, but no question he has the offensive game to compliment his elite shutdown capabilities.

Strengths

Checking:  Hitting is definitely the strength of Gavilrovs game, he uses his size to absolutely obliterate opponents and is a beast in the corners as well as in front of the net. Racking up 482 hits during his 144 game minor league career there's no question he has an elite physical game.

Goals/Assists: Yes both have quickly become a strength of his game, he's already led an entire league in assists last season with 61 and then goals for a defenseman the previous season with 27.  Posting 148 points from the blue line over 2 seasons there's no question this has become a strength of his developing game.

Toughness: Gavilrovs is one tough customer evident by his league leading penalty minutes, 204 last season in the VHLE

Weakness

We couldn't find any.

Future VHL Outlook:

Gavilrovs joins Vancouer this season in the pros and we can expect a strong physical performance by the former 7th overall selection. The big rookie defenseman will be in the top 4 and definitely throw his weight around making the Wolves very hard to play against every night. With higher talented competition and being further down on the depth chart we don't expect high offense in his first couple VHL seasons but he's surprised us before so we're not counting him out. With a focus on defense and physicality early on, moving to offense later in his career there's no question Guntis Gavilrovs has what it takes to become one of the best all around defenseman in the VHL one day and will certainly be in consideration for top defensive defenseman in his peak years, maybe more.

There's a lot to like about his hulking VHL rookie defenseman and we expect him to have a major impact for the Vancouver Wolves not only in his rookie season but during his entire career in the VHL.

I enjoyed reading this a lot, Gavilrovs looks like a beast with no weaknesses he is a defenseman any team would want. Being able to physically dominate and show up on the scoresheet is a huge asset looking forward to seeing your rookie season!
