So the off-season is chugging along and drawing inevitably closer to the start of the end of the road for Phil Strasmore.

The old-timer defenseman will be entering his ninth and final season, a long career played out entirely in a Calgary Wranglers uniform. I think the only other player in VHL history to do this was Sterling Labatte, who also spent his career in Calgary and played nine seasons for reasons I have long since forgotten.

Strasmore’s career has been predictable. He has consistently put up 55-65 points most seasons and gotten in the range of 225-275 and 150-170 hits and blocked shots, respectively. He managed to earn himself a Jake Wylde Trophy and, most proudly, helped the Wranglers to their own Continental Cup. He will never make it to the Hall of Fame but he will hold a few records for the franchise by this time next season.

This means at the trade deadline, VHL Hall of Fame Builder, Phil Knight will be signing another player to the agency, marking it as his 10th! We still don’t have details other than the new player is named “Phil” and hails from Great Britain. Shocker.

As for Strasmore, he is very excited for the start of the season. Statistically, he’s hoping to have a career year in points and hits. If he can finish his career strong, it will be a career that will be remembered fondly.
