At this point a season ago, the Nighthawks were running away with the Victory Cup. This season, they are in the hunt to repeat, as their 40-15-4 record is currently second best in the league behind only the Toronto Legion, who have a four point lead but one fewer game remaining. The Nighthawks have certainly done their part in keeping the Legion within reach, as they are now 3-0 against the league's top team.

In this most recent contest between, Karl Herzlich was making just his 6th start for Malmo, and he gave them just what they needed. The Legion outshot the Nighthawks 37-34, but a lone first period goal was all they could put past the rookie netminder, meaning the two goals for Malmo were enough. Toronto veteran Joel Castle did perform much better than he did in the other two matchups; in the first two games against the Nighthawks, Castle was lit up for eight first period goals (four in each game) with a 0.636 save percentage. In both games, he was pulled from the game without finishing the first period.

The Nighthawks have performed superbly against other top teams in the league as well. They are 4-0 against both Seattle and London. They have winning records against all of Moscow, Warsaw, and D.C., combining for an 8-4 record against the three of them. Their biggest struggles have come against Prague (1-4) and New York (0-2), and they also have a losing record against Chicago (1-1-1).
