Things I don’t know that I would like to know the answer to?

It has been a while since I have written a VHL.com article as I have been a GM for the last few seasons and as such have not needed to write as much to earn all my TPE.  Now that I have stepped down from my position, I will need to start doing these again.  So, I thought as my first one I would start by asking others some questions? I am going to keep the focus of the questions on the General Manager position:

  1. I am wondering if someone can elaborate on how important line building is on overall success of a team?

  1. Has any analysis been done from a GM perspective to look at how effective they are at encouraging first generation players to earn TPE.?

  1. Has there been any analysis done on VHLM GM looking at retention levels by team/GM when the player moves from VHLM to VHL/VHLE?

  1. Is there evidence to suggest that GM with longer tenures have better overall success than newer GM’s?

  1. Is anyone paying attention to VHLM GM statistics with the elimination of the VHLE?

Well those are my questions for now.  I am not expecting anyone to answer any of these questions but if someone has insight or details, I would love to hear them.

okay here we go, top of my head answers lets do it

1. I think line combinations can ruin a team, but never save them. Same with strategies. There is no "perfect" lineup combination that puts you a step above.

2. I know that my system gets me disproportionately more graduating players than others. I think it's an ineffective GM will lose more players, but a neutral to a perfect GM could have similar results. There will always be players who lose interest, our job is to not give them a reason to lose interest.

3. Before, during, and likely after the VHLE, players have been dropping like flies in the 200-300TPE range, or the equivalent TPE range for other earning eras, since the dawn of time. It just kind of happens. E looked worse because of it in its time, but the M was never much better and probably won't ever be.

4. I think longer tenured GMs can have higher peaks, but perhaps simply a slower descent. It's impossible to bring your A game every season, for an indeterminate amount of time. Far more important to have a higher floor than a higher ceiling. It's very easy to run out of things worthy of your time as a GM, and much much more obvious when you're bringing less than what you should be.

5. I don't think the M GM statistics are recorded in a meaningful way, so not really. Perhaps now they'll be more valuable what with the longer player lifespans in the M, but in the E era, each season was so new and so different that there was never really a mark of a consistently good GM, and GMs never really last multiple contention periods.
