I haven't been super active the last couple of weeks and that's due to some things I learned when I went for a checkup at the doctor. I haven't been in a while and figured that was something I should get taken care of.

While there, I had blood drawn for a myriad of different tests and things that my doctor wanted to check. As soon as some of them came back, she wanted me to go in for an ultrasound of my liver, which of course didn't have me feeling great.

That was today, and while I do have something called fatty liver disease, it's very manageable with a good diet and some weight loss, which I had already been wanting to do.

Then yesterday came and while there's one more test we're waiting on for something else, I got some news I wasn't expecting at all:

I'm diabetic.

One of my grandfathers was and lived well into his 80's but there's obviously a lot of changes and such I'm going to have to make but I'm doing my best to wrap my brain around it and figure out what I can and can't do. I can still have a good life, it's just going to look a little different than what I was thinking it would a week ago.

Hey Pal.  Thank you for having the stones to share such life changing news.  I hope you find solace in that you are not alone in your struggles.  I too come from a family of diabetics, and while I've been fortunate to avoid it thus far I have seen the changes some family members have had to make, even though many were very good athletes and took care of themselves.  Genetics sometimes plays a big role and it's the hand they are dealt.  It's all about finding the "new normal" and I have no doubt you will be hitting your stride and probably feeling better in no time.  Once you get it all dialed in I know your will come out the other side feeling like a new person.  This is a great community her in the VHL and you can always reach out if you need to chat.  Just the fact that you shared such personal info speaks volumes about who you are so I am confident you will prevail.

As soon as you mentioned fatty liver disease I figured the other news was going to be diabetic. I know you are worried at the moment but in the long run if you can make the changes required to live with being diabetic then you will a much better and happier life but it does take commitment. And as Scurvy states sadly it is genetics as both my grandfathers, uncles etc have lived with it.

Here is to your good health and I am confident you will be able to make the adjustments to you life!!
