In his first full season in the VHLM Tina Hughes played 72 games for the Miami Marauders where he tallied 4 goals 21 assists for 25 points. He also finished with a near league leading +48 and 110 hits on a very successful Miami team.

Although Tina struggled to adjust to the professional pace that comes with the VHLM he quickly became a very steady and reliable player the coaches could lean on; not often the case for rookies but Tina was rarely out there for goals against and because of his quick puck moving ability once he got it to his talented teammates they would often do the rest.

Hughes is only 5’10 and 170 lbs so he is often having to play bigger than he is to be able to compete with the best of the best, Tina would throw his body around a lot early in the season which also led to a lot of undisciplined penalties while trying to make a name for himself among his new teammates. Tina finished with 55 PIMS on the season which he hopes to clean up in his sophomore season.

Despite his impressive rookie numbers and the pure dominance of the Miami Marauders in the regular season, they would lose in the first round in 5 games…. A disappointing end to a team destined for bigger things.

A lot of stock was put into this season by the GM of Miami expecting more out of this roster and because of the graduating players and lack of draft capital; much of this roster will not be returning; Tina Hughes included.

Despite the disappointing playoff exit, Tina was quickly selected to his first WJC tournament roster representing USA. To this point in the tournament Hughes has 2 assists in 8 games while also being a -2; not what we are used to seeing from Tina; but with the bigger ice and different level of competition it can sometimes happen. One scout from the tournament was quoted to saying “The bounces aren’t going his way right now or for USA in general but when he is out there and when he has the puck you are still noticing him and he is making a difference”. Tina has high hopes to deliver gold for his country and show the general managers and the rest of the world why he’s such a highly touted prospect.

Tina Hughes was drafted 8th overall in the VHL draft by the New York Americans; a star studded draft New York saw the potential and high upside in Tina selecting him so high in the draft and with the VHLM draft right around the corner some lucky team is primed to do that same.
