FlyingWV 36
John Cowgill was born in Morgantown, WV and grew up a normal youth in a middle income family. His mother was a nurse and his father was a carpenter, they didn’t have great excess but they did okay for themselves. From a young age, surprisingly, John realized he wanted to pursue professional hockey, which is an odd choice for a small town boy from West Virginia. Most other kids his age were playing baseball or football, even soccer, but he had his heart set on hockey and emulated his idol Wayne Gretzky. He practiced religiously at the BOPARC ice rink, but did not have a chance to play organized hockey unfortunately, it just wasn’t popular in West Virginia, and his family did not have the money to do travel league sports. John achieved high grades in high school, being a high academic achiever, he graduated early at the age of 17. He made the bold decision at the age of 17 to pursue his dream, and bought a bus ticket to Mexico City, where he convinced the Mexico City Kings of VHLM fame to give him a shot at Center. His parents wanted him to pursue a college degree at the local university, West Virginia University. And while WVU does have a hockey team, it’s a club sport, not an organized sanctioned hockey league participant. And John just decided he WAS going pro, so off to Mexico City he went. His attributes leading into his debut will be more defensive oriented than offensive oriented. He’s focused his training so far on Stick Handling, Poke Checking, Defensive Awareness and a little bit of Offensive Awareness. He was lured to Mexico City with the assurance that he could get a look at the second line as a Center, which is all he could ask for. He has high hopes that he will be able to contribute for the team, despite not coming from a background of organized sports, relying purely on willpower and pure dedication and love of the game. He figures once he’s got his foot in the door, the sky is the limit, with a chance at moving up to a European league in the interim before hitting the big time and landing in the VHL as his end goal. The bonus of getting some playing time in the European league is that he can fulfill another childhood dream he has always had, and that is to travel abroad and experience different cultures. He’s not going to put the cart before the horse however, he has to prove he has what it takes in the VHLM first. Thankfully he’s not forced to find a part time job per se, because he actually earned a signing bonus to come to Mexico City, he’s hoping $1,500,000 will go along ways towards covering living expenses while in Mexico City. He has to be careful though, he’s already spent $500,000 to boost his training, so that he can contribute faster and prove that he belongs. He’s thinking about taking a side gig of reporting on the games and happenings of the VHLM, to help get a better understanding of the league, as well as earn some spending money on the side to supplement his contract. It’s a little tough, being a young guy, at the tender age of 17 in a big city like Mexico City, and to stay responsible with his funds is extremely difficult. However, his background growing up helps with this, as his family was used to making due with a modest income, so he’s not a spend thrift thankfully. His time not being spent honing his craft of playing hockey, is currently being spent intensively trying to learn Spanish. He’s completely unfamiliar with the language unfortunately, West Virginia is not a diverse population in general, so he was not exposed to various cultures growing up. He has high hopes of having a hall of fame career, and visualizes it daily, believing that what you think, impacts who you are and what you can become. He’s living proof that a small town boy from a small state like West Virginia, despite not having great access to ice rinks or organized hockey competition, you can still achieve big things if you put your mind to it. He’s done some research on the current center’s around the VHLM, and hopes he can at the very least have similar success to players such as Rain from Halifax 21st or CJ Franklin from Saskatoon Wild. He has similar abilities to both of those players, so if he can achieve similar things to them, he thinks his early career will get off to a successful start. Rain currently has a Plus / Minus of 1 through the first 2 games of the season. CJ Franklin also has a Plus / Minus of 1 through the first 2 games of the season. Rain and CJ Franklin have face off % success of about 41%, so that is John’s goal at minimum, to win at least 41% of face offs. If he can do that, he will be a contributor to Mexico City, and he can hold his head high. 863 Words sadie, Triller and Xhekityb123 2 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/155557-biography-of-john-cowgill-c-repost-posted-in-wrong-section-oops/ Share on other sites
