Prospect Scouting Report - Mia Miller

Mia Miller is a recent waiver pickup by the Philadelphia Reapers, who is coming off a strong four year career with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.  She will be entering the upcoming VHLM Dispersal Draft, but is coming to the Reapers looking to make an impact and help the team make some noise come playoff time.  When asked about her goals going into this time for her, this is what Miller had to say: “Just want to be productive and be reliable.  It will be a difficult challenge but also an excellent opportunity to get a lot better quickly.  I really believe in my talent and I do think I can make it far if I adjust to the pro transition effectively.”

Miller has a lot of strong positives in her game.  She is a stout defender who shuts opposing forwards down on a consistent basis.  In Kitchener, Mia was a regular defender on the penalty kill and was counted on in all situations, but especially defensive for the club.  She also showed to be very physical in the OHL, using all of her frame very effectively.  Offensively, she was much more known for her ability to handle the puck rather than her shot, but she did show off an accurate wrister rather consistently, that did generate a lot of goals over the course of her four year career in the “O”.

There are still a lot of areas that Mia will want to focus on as she transitions to professional hockey.  She does need to continue to develop her skating and improve her edgework.  While there was steady improvement in this regard over the last few seasons, she still needs some serious work to face off against the best the Victory Hockey League has to offer.  Additionally, the shot needs to develop or I believe her potential will be more of a number two or three defenseman.  The other area I would like to see improvement in is her strength, as she won’t be able to get away with her physicality in the OHL, the same way in the VHL.  This should come with consistent work in the weight room and overall physical development.

Miller projects to go in the first round or two of the upcoming VHLM Draft.  Whoever is getting her will be getting a defense-first player who is rounding out their offensive game to be the number one defenseman they aspire to be.  First though, she is looking to make a huge splash and help the Reapers win the Founder’s Cup.
