STZ 5,549
Pepe Silvia Prospect Report Position: Goalie Size: 6’6” 200lbs. VHLM: Mexico City Kings (5th Overall) VHL: New York Americans (10th Overall) Junior Career: Pepe Silvia was a late bloomer, who didn’t start his hockey career until his teens. His big frame and athleticism had put him more into traditional American sports like Football and Basketball. However, when trying out for his High School hockey team, he had a natural talent for the sport and the position of goalie. Silvia was scouted and drafted to the London Knights of the OHL, where his big body, quick reflexes and flexibility really stood out. He played two years in London before being scouted in the VHLM, and ultimately deciding to take his career to Mexico City as he pursued his path to the VHL. VHLM Career: Silvia spent his first half season of VHLM eligibility in Houston, where he played backup. However, he had some struggles in his first year as most first year goalies do putting up a .919 SV% but a nice 1.61 GAA. His record didn’t look as nice as the GAA, as he was barely over .500 when it came to his record. In his second season, Pepe got more starts as he played 64 games. He took on more of a workload, and his numbers had faltered on a weaker Mexico City team. In his final season in the VHLM, Pepe played really well. Despite only making 53 starts, Silvia was able to get 33 wins, with a SV% of .927 and a GAA of 1.51. In the playoffs, he was even better posting a .933 and 1.50 respectively. Unfortunately, the Kings met a powerhouse of a team in the Conference Finals and was eliminated VHL Outlook: Silvia is a top tier prospect, however, has been a pretty under the radar pick-up for the New York Americans. With a young core entering the VHL next season, Silvia looks to prove himself in a bigger role. The Americans starting goalie is set to retire at the end of the season, and unless New York acquires a goalie, Pepe Silvia could be their day one starter. He’s shown progress year over year, so there is no concern that he will once again take a forward step in his progression. There is concern that every time he levels up the league he is playing in, there’s a dip in production. That worry shouldn’t be much of a focus for the Americans who have a lot of time to let this 21 year old prospect cook. He would likely be best suited as a back-up goalie next year, but he also could very well get the job done with his size and raw talent.
