"Are you ready?" Sergiy asked as they maneuvered the sofa into the back of the large U-Haul moving truck and Slava heaved a sigh.

 

"As ready as I'm going to be." he shrugged. He had known that this could be a possibility. The general manager of the Seattle Bears had warned the entire team that no one would be safe during the off-season since they were headed for a rebuild and Slava had wondered if he was once again going to be on the move which, as it turned out, he was.

 

He had been given no indication of who had inquired and instead had just been informed that he would be going to Toronto, which was fine enough with him. Being back in Canada meant that it would be easier for his family to come to some games, beyond just the ones where he was in Calgary to face the Wranglers.

 

"Is it hard to be moving again?"

 

Slava considered his brother's questions as they made a final sweep of the apartment to make sure that they hadn't forgotten anything. "Yes and no. I hadn't really had much of a chance to get to know anyone super well but it's a bit of a bummer to be going somewhere new again. We all know how big a fan I am of change."

 

Sergiy laughed at that. As someone who was much more introverted, Slava hated being the center of attention and also dreaded having to be in situations where he had to introduce himself to people or be the new person. Even when he'd met his beloved fiancé River, River had been the one to come right up to Slava and say hello. Now he was going into a situation in Toronto where he would have to start all over again and that definitely didn't appeal to Slava, but he knew he couldn't keep his nose in a book forever.

 

"Which is to say not at all." his brother teased, and Slava gave him a mock glare.

 

"Plus, I'm starting to feel like the VHL doorknob. Toronto will be the third team to have a turn!"

 

Clearly not expecting something like that to come out of his brother's mouth, Sergiy had gone to take a drink of water out of his water bottle and was now sputtering, a combination of coughing and laughter. "Warn me before you say something like that!" he gasped out before starting to cackle.

 

"My back is to you, how was I supposed to know that you were drinking something and were going to end up sounding like a Sasquatch hacking up a hairball?" Slava retorted, turning to face his brother with his hands on his hips.

 

"I swear, the longer you've been away from home, the sassier you've gotten." Sergiy snorted, shaking his head as though he couldn't believe that Slava would do that to him but clearly, the brothers knew each other well.

 

"I just...I don't want people to think I'm some kind of a diva." Slava sighed, rubbing his forehead the way he always did when he was concerned or thinking hard about something. "Three teams in three seasons isn't the best look."

 

Sergiy just gave him the patented "you're being an idiot" look before speaking again. "Stanislav Gregorovitch, anybody who talks to you for more than two minutes knows what kind of person you are. You're about as far from diva as it's possible to get and if someone really assumes that of you, then they don't really know you and their opinion is stupid and not to be trusted. Everything is going to be fine."

 

Locking the door behind them before heading over to the rental office to drop the key off, Slava silently hoped that the next few seasons would indeed see him actually sticking around somewhere for a little while.

 

He hated moving.

Understood! My last player was traded so many times it was exhausting. I didn't even play for each team that acquired me!
