Age: 22

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 214 lbs

Born: Kansas City, Kansas

Position: Defensemen

Shoots: Left

Team: Bratislava Watchmen (VHLM)

While Kansas City has not had an NHL team in his lifetime, Tanner Hynes grew up watching the Kansas City Blades play in the IHF. Inspired, he began playing hockey as soon as he was able to skate, excelling immediately. A big kid, Hynes found that his place on the ice was toward the back end. Though the Blades folded in 2001, Hynes kept practicing, becoming a formidable presence in the defensive zone. He made his way out of Kansas city, seeking a chance to take hockey more seriously. Shortly before the beginning of S44, he declared his eligibility for the coming VHL draft. After a brief stint in Moscow, Hynes seems to have settled in Bratislava for now. Though he has been off to a slow start in the VHLM, he's impressed scouts by improving rapidly. He seems to have shown up out of nowhere, and it looks like he's here to stay.

Strengths

Tanner's biggest strength is, hands-down, his defensive awareness. He seems to be able to read a play before even the other team knows what they're going to do. He's always in the right place at the right time. He may not make the flashiest plays, but he's the guy you want in front of you nine times out of ten. He's definitely bailed me out more times than I can count. [laughs] -Benjamin Wilcott, G, former teammate

Hynes has one hell of a work ethic. I don't know if I've seen anyone else work as hard as him in practices. He's always the first one on and the last one off the ice. The kid doesn't quit. He's still young, and he's got some growing to do, but I know he'll end up a star in the VHL. -Scott Hart, former coach

[...] and Hynes with the big hit! You better watch out when this kid is on the ice - he turns the other team into bowling pins. Line 'em up and he'll knock 'em down! - Pat Murdoch, Bratislava Watchmen commentator

Weaknesses

He's still just a kid, you know? Everyone talks about how big he is, his positioning, whatever. But he still makes rookie mistakes, and he's going to keep making them until he's got some bigger games under his belt. And I'm just fine with taking advantage of those mistakes when he makes them. - Cyrus Hughes, rival left winger

[Hynes] needs to work on lifting more in the gym. He's got the mental toughness, but he's nowhere near as strong as a kid his size should be. He's not great on the stick lift, he gets knocked off the puck, he sometimes has issues finishing his checks... all because he focuses more on technique than on his body. Technique is all well and good, but he needs to step up his physique before he'll be a top-tier player for any team. - Terry Fitzpatrick, athletic trainer

Tanner Hynes has absolutely no offensive production. As a defenseman, he's not expected to put up the numbers of a star sniper, but he should definitely be pitching in some offensively. And he's not. The VHL isn't a league that particularly values shut-down defensemen like Hynes. It's possible that he'll end up struggling for playtime until he becomes more comfortable joining in on the attack. - Clyde Scott, scout
