CowboyinAmerica 2,889
Calgary, AB -- Along with being a somewhat middling goaltender (at least this season), Calgary's Hans Wingate is also known for one thing: his generosity. Wingate regularly gives back to the league in the form of donation dollars, and has done so for all five seasons he has been in the VHLM or VHL. Why exactly the league needs money, I'm not sure, though those lobsters for Higgins and Draper sure don't pay for themselves. Either way, Wingate receives some prizes for his donations, one of the most notable being a week free from practicing. But of course, Wingate has never cashed in on any of those five free practice weeks... until now. "Life got a bit away from me this week; I was simply too busy to come to practice," Wingate told reporters after a recent game against Davos. "I know my coach and GM might not like to hear that, but that's the whole reason I have these free weeks in the first place. I know that I'll turn it around next week though. This won't happen again." Wingate may be going through a rough season, but it's worth remembering just how young of a goaltender he is. Being in only his third season, Wingate tied the record last year for the youngest goalie to win a Shaw Trophy. Regression is understandable given that context, and he still expects a sparkling career moving forward.
