NAME: Ted Doughty

HOMETOWN: Windsor, Ontario

HEIGHT: 6'2"

WEIGHT: 220 lbs.

POSITION: D

Ted Doughty is the younger cousin of NHL defender Drew Doughty. Doughty is currently playing for the Guelph Storm in the OHL, but has declared for the VHLM draft and intends to play professional hockey in the VHL. Touted as a two-way defender, Doughty will bring a good mix of offensive production and defensive stability.

Positives

Skating: Doughty is a strong skater with powerful strides and strong acceleration. He uses his solid frame and long legs to get up to speed quickly and is a locomotive on skates once he hits top speed. His lateral movement is top notch and this allows him to quickly block off passing lanes and break up odd man rushes.

Physicality: One of the strongest parts of Doughty's game is his able to use his body both defensively and offensively. Bone-crushing hits on the open ice and along the boards are common place for Doughty. Wearing down opponents with strong play along the boards and in front of the net is his strong suit and makes him a very tough opponent to play against.

Hockey Sense: Doughty has great vision on the ice and can read a play before it happens. He utilizes his strong skating in addition to his ability to cover the ice well to break up defensive threats. Throw in an active stick that can break up plays and knocks pucks loose, and Doughty becomes a dynamo in his own end. Doughty can also quarterback the power play and is able to thread passes through defenders to help create chances for his teammates.

Negatives

Scoring Prowess: While Doughty has strong puck moving abilities, his shot leaves something to be desired. His slap shot is heavy but inaccurate and his wrist and snap shot abilities are weak at best. While not every defender needs to put up a lot of goals, he will have to work on his shot to become an elite and well rounded defenseman.

Discipline: While he is a voracious checker and aggressive in both ends of the ice, Doughty is liable to taking undisciplined or lazy penalties. He is prone to taking a lot of stick and body infractions, and has been known to drop the gloves at undesirable times in the game. This is problematic for his team as he'll get into a fight in the early part of the game and cost his team a key defender for five minutes. This is something Doughty will have to work on as he matures and gains more patience.

Experience: Being a young defenseman who is transitioning from major junior to the professional level, Doughty will undoubtedly have some slip ups and make mistakes. The rigors of a full professional season will be a big adjustment to this young defender, especially if he's relied on heavily by the VHLM team that drafts him. While he is a mature youngster, there is always the risk of a major burn out due to the adjustment in travel, playing time and the culture around being part of the VHL.
