Full Name: Fook Yu

Position: Center

Age: 18

Favorite Number: 88

An entry in the upcoming draft S54 VHL draft comes a player from Asia with similar roots to hall of famer Xin Xie Xiao. Although one could look at their sizes and think they were the same player, that is essentially where they end. Unlike his predecessor, Fook Yu is a defensive minded center hailing from Hong Kong who does not actually have the same offensive ceiling as the famed XXX.

PROS:

Size/Strength –

“He as big as they come and fearsome at that too. Whereas XXX bulldozed you over and drove towards the net, Yu uses his strength and size to contain you indefinitely either in the corners or along the walls. He has a wide wingspan and knows how to use it and along with great stick work, he possess the power to hold off an entire offensive charge. Also beware getting targeted in open ice by Yu, hes going to crush you and you’re going to go down hard. The guy takes no prisoners.” - PHIL MYRE – U.S. Head Scout

Defensive Play –

“It’s not just he is a big body, but the guy knows where to be, where to position himself so that he is negating your quality shot chances. He breaks up plays with an active stick and if you get too close, he is just going to throw you out of the play and take the puck himself. He’d basically acts like a 3rd or 4th defenseman and he just hounds the puck and loves to battle for it. Scoring on him while he is on the ice is not something you take for granted, you are going to have to fight for every point possible with him there.” - PAT FORCIEA

Faceoffs –

“Amazing technical skills in the dot, reminds me of Brind’amour with the way he combines skill and power in the dot depending which his opponent is weaker with. His ability to control the puck from the onset has set the ability for his teams to take possession early and throughout the game from almost all the draws. Rarely can one dominate the game through such a specialized skillset.”

CONS:

Offensive Upside –

“The problem is that you still need to score goals to win and I’m not sure how his offensive ability will translate to eh VHL. Certainly he is nowhere as gifted as XXX, but half of the same production might even be stretching it. He might merely be a pk specialist just because he lacks that game breaking offensive ability and where he focuses so much on safe plays and defensive zones that he doesn’t take many offensive risks if at all. I’d caution teams that he may be more of a specialist than an all around player.” - JOSE CHARBONNEAU – USHL Head Scout

Shootouts –

“Lacking creativity and 1 on 1 moves. Hes certainly not a great scorer even on breakaways, shootouts or just in general. Doesn’t have the flashy moves to fool a goaltender and if at all, will just go for a straight shot. Part of the offensive package that he lacks.” - BRENT PARKER – Western Canada Head Scout

Penalties –

With the rough physical style he plays, he’s bound to run into penalties. While he isn’t a dirty player by any means, he does play on the edge and occasionally he’s going to tip to one side and get called for it. Coaches will have to be aware of his capabilities and tell him to tone it down if need be in order to not put his team in a disadvantageous position.” - DENNIS MACINNIS (Director of Scouting) – Central Canada Head Scout
