Volkov Looks to Repeat With Aces in Final VHLM Season

 

After winning the Founder's Cup with the Aces in Season 54 with one of the best teams in the history of the VHLM, Luca Volkov is once again back in Vegas with the intentions of repeating with some of the same faces and some new ones as well. We caught up with Volkov before the season kicked off earlier this week with some questions about his off-season and how his time at the World Cup went. 

 

You recently got to represent your country of Switzerland at the World Cup as someone who hasn't even played in the VHL yet. How was that?

It was a great experience. Although we definitely didn't have the best tournament and I struggled quite a bit, I learned a lot and realize I have a long way to go in my training before I'm ready to keep up with the best in the league. Not to mention meeting some of the other guys was a nice, hopefully I can be there again in a couple of seasons and we can make more noise than we did this time around.

 

There was a lot of controversy surrounding the Wranglers and their trade of Verner Reinholdt this off-season. What did you think of the trade?

Quote

I had never really spoken with Reinholdt except at some team events immediately after the draft, besides that we had only played each other. He had his own wishes and it was obvious Calgary wasn't part of that. I think we got a good prospect with the draft pick we got for him, so it looks like both teams made out pretty well. I don't want to stir the pot too much about that, I think our GM has said enough.

 

What are your goals for this season?

Quote

Well, obviously it's to win another Founder's Cup with this team and repeat. It's a rare thing to be able to do that in the VHLM with such turnover so that's the main goal. But beyond that I'd like to try and get some individual hardware possibly defenseman of the year and also really step up my development so next year for Calgary I can compete for Rookie of the Year. Really looking forward to getting this on the road.
