I decided to put my desire to watch others into good use and take a closer look at the team who is playing against us next in the playoffs. Calgary Wranglers is that team, they managed to beat Toronto Legion on the first round and go through to the next round where we will be waiting.

Looking at purely from TPE point of view, Calgary´s best player is their goalie - Jacob. He was on great form against Toronto. Stopped 92,8% of the shots and was perhaps the most important player for Calgary. As he should be, goaltending is huge in hockey, especially in the playoffs.

After Jacob there is quite large punch of players between 400 and 500 TPE. In total of five players in that group, so they have solid amount of depth in their lineup. Marc-Alexandre Leblanc who is a center scored 11 points in 6 games, he was the leading scorer for Calgary with Felix Savard who also managed to collected 11 points in 6 games, Savard is a defender. That is a solid foundation for a team right there, great goalie, great center and great defender.

Behind Leblanc and Savard, rest of the team did not manage to reach similar numbers, third best scorer was  Max von Hohenzollern who got 5 points in six games. Rookie player Jake Scheel also collected 5 points.  Max and Jake played on the first line with Leblanc, so quite interesting how they both got ´only´ 5 points? Is it a chemistry issue or what, but for example on the powerplay where the trio is together as well, they have only one goal between them? Even more interesing is the fact that four of their powerplay goals have come from the defenders, both Titan Kronoss and Luca Volkov have rammed two goals each on the powerplay, so it´s quite clear what Calgary´s strategy is on the powerplay, get the puck to the point and let the defenders fire it away while forwards screen the goalie and try to slam any rebounds in.  Simple and effective really, but still going to say that if Calgary wants to go through to the finals, forwards need to be able to score few more goals on the PP, could be the difference maker between win and a loss.

To summarize my report little bit, Calgary is a dangerous team, they have solid depth on defense, two full pairs and enough skill on the offense to actually score goals. So far in the playoffs it´s been mostly Leblanc and Savard who have found their name on the scoresheet, but Max von Hohenzollern and Jake Scheel can just as easily get the job done, so we need to be careful with their first line, cant focus too much on Leblanc. Also at the same time we need to find a way to make life for Calgary´s defenders as hard as possible, cant give them any free time on the blueline, they will find the open man and make us pay for it.

My personal guess on how the series will end up is the following: Quebec is going to win and on game six. Jacob and Calgary´s depth is what will bring them two wins, Quebec and dangerous offense combined with great goalie is enough for series win still.

Hopefully Calgary actually is the team who we play against next, otherwise.. well this is bit awkward.
