Fook Yu Converts to Wing

It has been a long off-season for Yu. A season marred with errors, setbacks and even at times a benching combined with missing the playoffs made for a very frustrating year for the entire team. Headed into this off-season, he had what could be known as a very interesting conversation with his GM in regards to steps moving forward. So for the first time in his career, he began training with the assumption that he would no longer be the center in the following season. For fans of Fook Yu and for those that knew him, they knew this would take time and a lot of commitment to work. Playing center all his life, this would not be the easiest change for him and nobody knew if this would even be the right move. But with that discussion in mind and looking towards the future, Yu took the chance and prepared himself in the off-season for it.

“Its not easy you know, changing the mentality, changing my focus and even changing my training regime. I had to actually get some specialized trainers to help me focus on some things that would help me excel as a winger so hopefully all that extra work and cost will pay off.  This was decided between me and the GM based on what the future of the team was likely going to look like this season and in the future and we thought best that if I converted my game over to the wing side that it would help us in the long run. Everything from me diet to specific techniques came into play here. I gained a few extra pounds in order to be heavier in the corners, but I also made sure I didn’t loose any of my speed. I focused a lot more on board play this summer and had to train for playing defensive hockey from the wing side. Some of things were easy, others less so. All in all, I think this will work out. I mean last season was just dreadful. I can’t think of anything being more disappointing than not even getting a chance to compete for the championship. Its unacceptable to our fans, my teammates and myself especially to be in that position.”

Fook Yu had a dismal season last year compared to his prior seasons. Many thought his play was subarpar despite still scoring 30 goals for 70 points in the season and registering 371 hits and still strong in the faceoff circle with 60% wins. He admitted as much that he felt there was more he could’ve given to help and he felt he had far more turnovers last season than he could remember.

“A lot of it had to do with me, at times we also had some instability as we constantly shuffled the lines back and forth, I think I played a few stints at wing already throughout the year before switching back and just a lot of things to get things going, but we just couldn’t get it done when we needed it the most. Bottom line is, I have to be better. We have to be better than last season.”

What will hold for Fook Yu whom has switched over the wing? Only time will tell.

Review:

Dat moment when you're reviewing a post about Fook Yu from December, and now he's on your team. :shades:

Good write-up. It's funny in the VHL, how the only real difference you need to worry about as a C or W is your faceoff stat. Strength works there too, but you should be doing strength as a W most of the time anyways.
