Growing Up:

Sebastian Ironside was born in one of Sweden's more populated cities, in Norrkoping. No, Sebastian was not born in the same city as his cousin Torstein, which was Ornskoldsvik. Sweden as most people know these days is a huge hockey country, bringing the world huge talents like Henrik Zetterberg, the Sedin twins, Henrik Lundqvist, Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, and many others. There would simply be too many to name on a fear that any would be forgotten. Sebastian's parents were both also born and raised in Norrkoping, and both had great careers in their respective areas. His father, Daniel, was a lawyer at a top firm for decades, and known around the country for his work. Meanwhile, his mother Gwen was a surgeon for many years herself at one of Norkkoping's big hospitals. You might have read previously in Sebastian Ironside's Rookie Profile that he comes from a wealthy family, and that probably becomes obvious with his parents having these types of careers.

Sebastian grew up watching plenty of hockey, whether it be the Sweden Elite League, the NHL, or his cousin Torstein in the VHL. He watched what many Swedes accomplished in the NHL, and what his cousin Torstein was able to do so far with the Toronto Legion in the VHL. Sebastian's parents were both huge into hockey themselves, watching teams like MODO over the years, so they somewhat pushed Sebastian into the sport. Sebastian was not against hockey at all, but was never the biggest fan of playing the game himself, but rather watching it. Although, the day came when Daniel and Gwen laced some skates on Sebastian's feet and brought him to the local hockey rink, and little Ironside loved it. Once he got into the groove and was able to skate around on his own, he did not want to stop.

The Minors:

Sebastian's career in hockey began when he was just a kid, joining one of his local teams through his high school in Norrkoping. He was not the most notable guy out on the ice, starting off as a forward but not getting much done out there. Sooner or later the coach seen he was a decent passer, and was better on the defensive side of things, so he transitioned to defense. At the minor level in Sweden, Ironside became one of those kids that everyone watched on the back end, with his outlook passes and great defensive play. The parents watching those games were not a fan when Ironside was on the ice, because it prevented their children from scoring goals. Sebastian Ironside never won any championships at that lower level, but some scouts from Canada's junior systems took notice, and the Ironside name had a ring to it, with Torstein playing for the Windsor Spitfires.

The Juniors:

So, after the CHL took notice of Sebastian Ironside, a few teams reached out to him over in Norrkoping. Word also got through that he was Torstein Ironside's cousin, so analysts were drawn to him from his obvious hockey talents. After a long talk with his parents, Sebastian decided on an offer from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Lucky for him, he was able to find a good living situation with the family of one of his Knights teammates, so his expenses were paid and he was flying off to Canada. In his first season on the London Knights, he was a pretty good player for the team, notching 53 points in 60 games on defense. He scored 23 goals, while adding 30 assists, so you could imagine he was very noticeable in his games. The Knights went to the post-season where they were eliminated in the quarter finals of the Memorial Cup, where Ironside collected 6 points. In his second OHL season, still with the Knights, he played 64 games and put up 72 points. This time around, he scored 31 goals and put forward 41 assists. His Knights that season lost in the semi-finals, but Ironside did have 12 points in those playoffs.

NHL Draft:

After putting up great numbers in the CHL, multiple NHL teams were excited to try and lead him to the big leagues. Sebastian Ironside's hockey motivations were a bit of a question mark regarding the NHL, and many scouts had thoughts that he might follow in his cousin Torstein's footsteps to the VHL. Even so, NHL teams could not give up the chance to possibly put this kid as a prospect in their system. Sebastian Ironside did not get picked up in the 1st Round, which is not surprising, but he did get picked in the 3rd Round of the NHL Entry Draft. He went 84th overall (22nd in the 3rd), and it was the Carolina Hurricanes who took that chance on him.

The Choice Between Leagues:

It was a big off-season for Sebastian, trying to decide whether or not to go to the NHL or the VHL. His cousin Torstein's career meant a lot to him, but all the superstars in the NHL, especially Nik Lidstrom had him favouring the NHL as a destination. It was not until a certain event towards NHL training camp that Ironside would make his mind up. He received a phone call from his cousin Torstein Ironside, and we have the voice recording:

Quote

Hey, buddy. I heard you were having thoughts on going to the NHL? I think you should steer in the other direction, and put our name on the map in a bigger way in this league that I have been playing in. The Ironside name has made its mark as far as goaltending, but we need to get on the scoresheet. I think you have what it takes to make a big impact in the VHL, so make your way to the VHLM and you will surely prove me right. The VHL needs you.

Without further ado, Sebastian's intentions were decided. He had multiple offers from the VHLM, but it was an enticing offer from the Ottawa Lynx and the location that put him into the VHL's minor system. You see, the Ottawa Lynx are obviously a short distance from the London Knights of the OHL, so it was a no hassle move for Ironside. His superstar cousin Torstein's convincing phone call was the major factor here, but now Sebastian is truly motivated to become a hockey star.
