Player Overview

With a solid frame, and willingness to go into the dirty areas, Wilson has a knack for winning puck battles all over the ice. He has a very heavy shot, with the ability to score from anywhere in the offensive zone. In addition to developing offensive skills, his positional awareness and physical attributes allow him to create havoc near the crease, in both zones of the ice.

Bio

An older rookie at 27, Wilson has grinded his way through the ranks over the years. A few years dealing with injuries lead to an early retirement. However, with a lot of hard work, dedication to excellence, and most importantly a deep passion for the game left him hungry for more.  Wilson battled his way through various levels of hockey through the years, yearning to live the VHL dream.

Wilson has experience all over the ice, with the ability to play all 5 skater positions. Originally a scoring forward as a youth prospect, Josh volunteered to switch to defence to help his top-heavy team and quickly became an effective two-way defenceman. After a few strong seasons on the back end, he switched back to forward and regained his hunger for scoring goals.

Pros

Wilson is a presence in the lineup. He is noticeably physical on the forecheck and verbally involved both during and after the play. This often leads to a power play as he definitely has an ability to get under the skin of his opposition. Wilson can be an effective shut down player due to his strong defensive background. He has an active stick and solid positioning.

With the puck, Josh is capable at producing offence one-on-one with defenders, as well as by distributing the puck effectively. He has good vision and likes to feather some sauce to his teammates.

Wilson has a special ability to get his stick on the puck in scoring areas around the net, which allows him to score goals - something he definitely enjoys. His heavy shot allows for him to generate scoring chances from all areas of the offensive zone

Cons

Josh Wilson is currently a very poor skater. He has absolutely no foot speed, it seems as though he is wearing skate-weights. Wilson cannot seem to stay on his feet, weather he is getting hit, laying a hit of his own, shooting the puck, etc. He’s more than likely going to fall afterwards. He even trips over his own feet while doing cross overs.

Faceoffs are another area of concern for Wilson. If he wants to continue as a center throughout his career, he needs to drastically improve his faceoff skills. He currently loses a majority of the draws he takes.

While not lacking in size and strength, Wilson could also stand to improve his hitting in order to become an elite powerforward. Former coaches have claimed Wilson can be inconsistent in his tendency to line up opponents with open ice hits. Claiming he often chooses to simply poke check the puck instead of taking the body, in offensive opportunities.

Discipline has also been a problem for Wilson, as he is not afraid to drop the gloves and has a tendency to often find himself in post-whistle antics.

Future Outlook

Debuting in S65, Josh Wilson has all the tools available to become a future star in the VHL. With a strong defensive game, and promising offensive skills, an inadequate skating ability currently holds back Wilson’s development.
