Introduction to the VHLM

Slaeter Fjorsstrom declared his eligibility for the VHL at the Season 35 trade deadline.  Fjorsstrom was quickly claimed by the Vasteras IK J20 on waivers and placed on their roster.  Unfortunately he didn’t see much playing time in the regular season as he was not inserted into their lines.  Playing an average of fifteen minutes a game, Fjorsstrom managed one assist in nine games played.  He also racked up fifteen hits and fourteen blocked shots.

In the playoffs, Fjorsstrom saw added responsibility, averaging twenty-four minutes a game.  With that added responsibility, he saw an increase in his point total.  Slaeter recorded his first VHLM goal in Game Two against the Oslo Storm.  In the third period, Fjorsstrom scored Vasteras’ fifth goal of the game, an insurance marker.  Unfortunately for Vasteras, they were eliminated in six games.  In those six games, Slaeter had seven points, thirteen hits and eleven blocked shots.  His seven points were good for second on Vasteras in scoring, one point behind Hattrick Schwayze for the team lead.

Journey to the Founder’s Cup

In the offseason, Fjorsstrom worked hard at the practice rink and was rewarded because of his strong work ethic.  In the Season 36 VHLM Dispersal Draft, he was drafted first overall by the Bratislava Watchmen.  After a locker room vote, Fjorsstrom was named assistant captain of the Watchmen.  Throughout the season, Slaeter had trouble finding his groove and after a couple of different defensive line combinations, he found chemistry with Phil Villeneuve.  He ended the season with 78 points, 82 hits and 73 blocked shots.  Despite his decent showing in the regular season, Fjorsstrom couldn’t help but be disappointed.

In the ten playoff games, Fjorsstrom found his offensive game and recorded fifteen points, including eleven hits and ten blocked shots.  His fifteen points led all defensemen, all Watchmen skaters and was second in the league in scoring.  Fjorsstrom also added a 47 percent shooting percentage, taking only twelve shots the entire playoffs.  The Watchmen went 8-2-0, lifting the Founder’s Cup at the end of the playoffs.  Because of his solid play in the playoffs, he was nominated for the Esposito Trophy for the Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs.  However, he lost by two votes to teammate Martin Brookside.

Getting Drafted in the VHL

His dedication and solid play paved the way for him to be taken first overall by the Riga Reign in the Season 37 VHL Entry Draft.  Recently Fjorsstrom has hit 300 practice hours, the second player in the Season 37 draft class to hit that milestone.  The Reign will look to Fjorsstrom to lead the defensive core for years to come.  Luckily for the Reign, Slaeter has already established chemistry with fellow Riga defenseman Phil Villeneuve.  It will be a tough first few seasons for the rookie as it will take a couple of seasons before both he and Villeneuve develop into solid VHL defensemen.  Currently, Fjorsstrom is one of the favourites to win the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy as Rookie of the Year, but will have hefty competition with former teammate Tom Slaughter.

Future Outlook

Slaeter Fjorsstrom has all the tools to be a top defenseman in the VHL.  If he keeps up his work ethic, he could see himself in constant consideration for the Sterling Labatte trophy as the VHL’s top defenseman.  Fjorsstrom will need to continue to develop and will likely become a franchise defenseman for the Riga Reign.

This had a completely different approach than what I've seen today. Instead of incorporating the pros and cons, you talked about getting drafted and the outlook for Fjorsstrom. It was different in it's own right and separated itself a bit from that typical Rookie Profile style that so many use.
