Trouble Brewing in Riga?

As everyone who works for a living knows, when you’re around someone for about three hundred days a year, there are going to be times when you have a disagreement or are in a fight with your coworkers. When one of your coworkers happens to be a family member, these entanglements tend to get a little more heated. This is the situation currently in the Riga Reign locker room, as cousins Robin Gow and Robert Gow III seem to be feuding.

The origins of this feud can easily be traced back to childhoods of both players. Growing up, not only were the two forwards compared to their fathers who used to play in the VHL, but their progress through each age group was scrutinized. While the stats on the score sheet were hard to compare due to the difference in play style between the two players (Robin is more of a two-way, pass first center while RGIII has always focused more on goal scoring), the constant evaluations were more than annoying for both players.

“Yeah, it kind of bugged me that I was always compared to Robin,” complained younger cousin RGIII. “I know he’s older than me so it’s only natural that I’d be put up against him and not the other way around, but honestly, that’s how I felt it should have been. We all know that I’m the better player because I put the puck in the back of the net. Robin has to rely on his teammates to play well in order for him to succeed. I learned early on that I can’t rely on anyone to do anything for me on the ice, so I just learned to do it all myself.”

This selfish, me-first attitude displayed by Robert Gow III is the main cause of recent troubles between the two teammates. Early on before the start of Season Thirty-Seven, the Reign trotted out the same top line of Brennan McQueen, Robin Gow, and RGIII. During practice, RGIII kept demanding that Robin pass him the puck so he could “go do what goal scorers do.” Annoyed, the cool headed Robin just kept playing his game. This angered Robert immensely to the point where he approached coach Mike Szatkowski after training and demanded to be put on a line by himself so he could play the way he wanted to, which was a selfish game similar to Nikolai Zherdev.

“We all knew RGIII was a little ‘me-centric’ before we drafted him,” quipped General Manager Szatkowski. “I mean, what type of individual trademarks his own nickname? Unfortunately for Robert, he’ll have to play with Robin this season, as we currently only have one center on the roster, but we let him play with Matteo Gallo, who’s more of a floater and commands the puck less.”

When you look at the stat sheet, it’s hard to feel any sympathy for the winger. Through eleven game this season, RGIII has five goals, which is tied for third most on the team. However, Robin Gow has eleven points, all of which are assists. In order to keep the peace, Robin has just passed the puck to RGIII when they play together, although deep down inside, the center knows that the two of them could be much more dynamic on the ice if only RGIII would trust him. This will be an interesting storyline to follow throughout the two players’ careers, as one would expect a pass first center and a shoot first winger to have instant chemistry.

590 words. I loved the concept surrounding the cousins of the Reign. The writing was so spot on, fluent and easy to transition through. This was such a good story and something you or someone else could build off of in the future.
