Match Fixing Scandal: VHL Corporation Replies to FBI Inquiries

Recommended Posts

In a brief press conference today, officials at VHL headquarters have publicly confirmed they are fully cooperating with requests from both the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). “We provided over 2.5 million documents in full compliance with requests from investigators. The VHL and its minor league, the VHLM, intend to fully cooperate with all current and future requests.” said VHL PR spokesperson, Dani Greene. They continued “The VHL looks forward to this opportunity to be completely transparent with how our league operates. The VHL has always, and will always care about its players and fans first and foremost. We believe our league has found a way to create a healthy and safe environment for our amazing athletes that is exciting for fans worldwide. The results of this investigation will show that. We welcome any public debate and discussion that come from this investigation.” Mx. Greene said as they left the podium without taking any questions.

The language used in the press conference never directly addressed the match fixing allegations at the heart of the investigation. In fact the VHL appears determined to shape the discussion to a larger theme focused around how the athletes are treated in general, rather than discrediting the match fixing allegations directly.

An anonymous official with close ties to the investigation who spoke under the condition of anonymity due to not being cleared to speak about the ongoing investigation said “With professional sports leagues, we would normally expect 10,000 maybe 50,000 documents for an investigation of this scope. Either the VHL is trying to bury the investigation in paperwork, which never works because we’ll just hire more people, or there is way more than meets the eye going on in this league.”

While the FBI and NGC have not officially provided a time frame for when they expect the investigation to end and their findings made public, the anonymous official asserted they hope to have the investigation completed before the start of the next season. Although, due to the massive number of documents, that timeline may be in jeopardy.
