Fire Tortorella 2,653
Werbenjagermanjensen Starting Pivotal Season DAVOS, SWITZERLAND - Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen is a rookie no more. After completing his first two seasons, the HC Davos Dynamo defenseman is looking to take the next step and become one of the bonafide star defensemen in the league. Since being drafted in Season 65, no other player has put in more practice hours or have more practice hours overall. However, the stats, specifically the offensive stats, haven't always shown up. "I'm proud to consider myself a physical two-way player, so I always knew that my offensive numbers might take a little bit longer to show in the VHL, but if I was being honest, I was hoping they'd be a little bit higher at this point," stated Werbenjagermanjensen. "I finished with 48 points last year, only 1 more than the 47 points I had as a rookie. My defensive numbers were much better and I re-invented myself as a player, focusing more on shooting and scoring than passing, but I was still expecting more. As a whole, our defensive group has had problems putting up offensive numbers. I don't really want to re-open this can of worms, but look no further than Shawn Glade's production in Davos compared to the other teams he's played on. I'm hoping that going into this season, our group of defensemen will have the reigns taken off and allow us to play a more offensive game." Smitty has become one of the defensive leaders on the Dynamo. When he first joined the team, there were other players such as long-time Davos captain Alvaro Jokinen and Glade, who were the better, more experienced players that led the defensemen. While Jokinen is still the captain and is a leader off the ice and in the locker room, Werbenjagermanjensen has become the on-ice leader. "I'll be the first to admit I'm not a presence in the locker room. Others are better at speaking and leading than me. I let my talking be done on the ice. I go out there every game and every week and give it my all, whether it's in a game, during practice, or during the off-season. I do what needs to be done to win, and that definitely rubs off on some of the younger guys. They're coming from the minors where talent alone is enough to succeed. In the pros, everyone is talented. It's the little details you work on in practice and in the film room that allow you to become a great player." Smitty is entering his third season in the league and has not yet signed a contract extension, meaning he is currently slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the league year. Talks are ongoing between the defenseman and management, but an agreement has yet to be reached. It is well known that Werbenjagermanjensen enjoys Davos, his teammates, and his history with the team, but it remains to be seen if the team's window of contention will align with Smitty's career aspirations.
