As the season moves along, it is becoming apparent that being a rookie in the VHL is often brutal. If you were used to a lot of minutes in the VHLM, forget about that in the big league. You are now a low skilled rookie that needs to earn a handful of minutes. It can be rewarding and deflating at the same time. It will take at least a full season to work hard and gain enough skill to even think about earning a bigger role on most teams.

One thing I see are players staying down in the minors for an extra season. I thought that would be a waste of time and a full season you would miss in the VHL. Now I can see some advantages in staying down and building some skills for an extra season, then go into the draft and at least be ahead of the curve, even if that is just a slight advantage.

There are a few though that have come up in their rookie season and have made an impact. Those are only the exception though. You have to be on the right team and in the right position, along with other factors that have to align to make it all work.

Bottom line, rookie seasons are hard and you just have to dig in and work through it. The end result should be in a few seasons you will be on a line that will impact the game and your player will have the skills to claim a more responsible role.
