You guys know what ELO is by now, but some of the newbies may have missed some of my earlier articles since it's been a couple seasons since I've touched on it. Just search "ELO and the VHL" in the forum search bar to find the old ones if you're confused.

Anywho, to kick us off I've got the ELO chart from last season, S68. I finally got around to adding in the two newest expansion teams, but since I left the most up to date version of the sheet in Canada, this chart doesn't account for goal differential. I'll bring that back for next season.

Boom, there it is.

Some key takeaways here:

1. DC isn't actually quite as bad as they look, but Prague is in fact much better than where they finished in the standings. In terms of end of season skill, they were right up in the group of Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and New York.

2. Riga is pretty clearly the best team in the league at season-end, but that didn't mean shit for them as they went out rather disappointingly in the second round.

3. Although Seattle wiping the floor with everyone in playoffs is a bit of a surprise, them winning the cup is not. They're right smack dab in the middle of good-to-great group of teams a little behind Riga, alongside Malmo, Moscow, and Davos.

4. Helsinki had a really really weird season trajectory. They held a resounding first place for a while and even as late as game ~55 they were convincingly in the lead, but then they squandered it away and ended up being pretty painfully mediocre by the end, stuck in between the group of competitors and non-competitors.

I'll look at the S69 graph next week with some midseason comments.

Damn, hit 300 words again. Curse me and my runaway mouth.
