Moderator Baozi 1,658 Posted March 10, 2020 Moderator Share Posted March 10, 2020 Jungkok was born September 4, 2002 in Seoul, South Korea. He attended Bukkake Elementary and middle school in Seoul. His parents were part of the international business community managing hockey equipment imports into the country so early on exposure to hockey was inevitable. During this time Jungkok also had aspirations of becoming a singer after seeing G-Dragon perform live in his “Heartbreaker” Big Bang concert. Initially he was enrolled in the performance training academy Singu Middle school and also was a trainee in the reality Korean pop star show “Superstar K”. While he did not finish top in the show, he did receive casting offers from seven entertainment agencies, including “Big Hit Entertainment”. At this time, Jungkok was also heavily involved in athletic activities in the training school, earning no less than letters in badminton, soccer, roller hockey and basketball. With the intention to try and ensure all avenues were open for their Jungkok, his parents had him attend a preliminary semester at the prestigious Asia Hockey Academy. Jungkok’s preliminary semester at AHA was met with huge success. His natural ability across multiple different sports allowed him to quickly pick up hockey as well. The skating part was naturally rough to begin with but all other facets of his game translated fairly easily. What did happen was that Jungkok discovered a huge interest in hockey and by the end of the preliminary weeks, he was already looking to invest his energy into the sport. The feedback from the academy was that with additional time and effort into the skating sessions, Jungkok could potentially take his aspirations to the next level. With that in mind, Jungkok decided to pursue hockey even further and his parents duo-enrolled him in the Academy full time while maintaining his singing training. Throughout the winter, Jungkok played on the training team, and despite only starting hockey at this stage and never receiving formal training soon became a impact in the junior circuit. By the middle of November, Jungkok had began to break onto the senior team temporarily when injuries arose. His first adult circuit team involved was against the Golden Amur team from Russia. Providing a huge physical presence, he recorded several hits including the game winning goal enroute to the Academy’s win over the adult Russian team. In conjunction with his rise in the sports realm, Jungkok released his first solo song “Begin” which garnered huge priase from fans and critics alike. He credited much of the success to his mentor “Rap Monster”, in helping him write the lyrics for his solo release. Critics have marvelled at his ability to maintain both developmental paths at this time, citing his ability to remain dedicated to ao full time pro sport path as well as engaging in his own musical career. https://youtu.be/mqUejlb0z1o The following January, Jungkok signed onto Big Hit Label and Records, while maintaining full time status on the Academy team. His social media and offline presence was growing as well, with many fans turning out at even his team practices to a point where a crowd one would normally see at a pro game would turn out for even the varsity team practices. Not letting this deter or distract him from his goals, Jungkok was seen to be fully immersed in his development path. Luckily the privacy of the Academy allowed him to ignore distractions and focus on his training while on the campus. Nearing the end of his first year at the academy, the opportunity arose for him to join the senior team on a permanent basis as one of the forwards found a pro signing opportunity and had left the team at the time. Coaches at AHA at the time commented that they saw a player similar to that of Xin Xie Xiao from several generations ago and it was at this time that scouts began to take interest in Jungkok. JK as many referred to him as was commented on having a strong physical game with the ability to score. The most undeveloped part of his skillset was easily his skating ability which dampened thoughts on him by scouts as others cited that the large difference between him and reference XXX was likely to begin there. In his second year at the academy, Jungkok decided he would register for the VHL draft for the following year. Going into the fall, he had pushed himself to the top six of the academy senior team with an eye on breaking into the VHL within the next several years. Coaches at this time still cited that his alternate focus into his singing career would likely hold him back in terms of development due to him having to split time between the two development paths. Oh well. Onward and upward...he decided. Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/78610-superstar-k-trainee-to-play-hockey/ Share on other sites
