History

20130223_joethornton_jamiebenn_446w.jpg

Growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, Sam Keeler knew better than most that in order to be successful at anything he does that he would need to work hard and put his nose to the grindstone. Keeler lives through that same motto when it comes to playing hockey. Keeler plays an extremely tough game that sees him consistently put his body on the line for his teammates to be successful at the professional level. Keeler for the most part is known as a grinder, but one that knows how to put pucks in the back of the net for his team in clutch times. Playing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the NCAA for 2 years, Keeler looked like a man playing against boys with his huge frame and his consistent ability to finish his checks. He was a fan favorite in Badger Land, also due to the fact that he was from Madison itself. After his sophomore season at Madison where he was 2nd on the team in scoring, Keeler decided it would be best for his career to move onto the next level if he had any hope of perusing the game at the NHL level.

"Sam plays a professional game, so I fully support his decision to enter into the VHL draft. Keeler has proven everything that he needs to do at the NCAA level and perhaps sometimes I think he is too physical for the NCAA in general. I hope his nastiness, physicality, and goal scoring touch bring him a lot of success at the professional level. He's the type of player that you win Stanley Cups with, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does in the future." -Mike Eaves

Pros

Physical Presence: As said previously, Keeler is an extremely physical player who is certainly not afraid to drop the gloves when it's needed. With how close to the edge Keeler plays the game in terms of the checks he throws, it won't be a surprise to see him have to drop the gloves multiple times over the course of his VHL career. When Keeler is on the ice, every player will have to have their head on swivel to make sure they won't be laid out by a booming check that Keeler made his staple in the NCAA.

Goal Scoring: Despite being labeled as a player who prides himself on defending his teammates and playing the body, Keeler is actually a very talented goal scorer. With great finishing hands in close and a quick wrist shot, Keeler will have no problem bringing his finishing abilities to both the VHLM and VHL. With both the ability to bury and play the rough side of the game, Keeler has the reputation of a player who is perfect for the playoffs or a game with a rival.

Leadership: Earning an assistant captaincy in only his sophomore year at Wisconsin, Keeler is considered one of the best young leaders in the NCAA and according to scouts, he has the ability to become a future captain in the VHL. Sam Keeler is a player who leads by example, but at the same time is vocal in communicating with his teammates as well. With a mix of both grit and skill, it's easy for Keeler's teammates to respect him both on the ice and off the ice.

Cons

Self Control: The obvious downfall of Keeler's game is the fact that he has trouble staying composed when another player gets under his skin. Keeler has been suspended multiple times by the NCAA for throwing dirty hits and attempting to start fights with players unnecessarily. Keeler will need to correct this flaw before he gets into the VHL or it could get extremely ugly from the get-go in terms of what fellow players think of him.

Vision: Keeler's vision is certainly something that is lacking, and his passing is sorely short of the professional level because of it. Keeler has always been known as more of a shooter rather than a passer, but he will need to add depth to his game if he has any hope of becoming a player who can get on the stat sheet regularly for his team.

Another great Rookie Profile that I've read today. You had a solid introductory paragraph, followed by some real solid pros and cons. Just by reading your Profile, Keeler almost sounds like Milan Lucic-type without the bullshit in the handshake line.
