Roque Davis - Prospect Scouting Report

There’s a lot to talk about when you look back at Roque’s stint in the VHLM. After a very basic end to the 69^th season of the VHLM, Roque was drafted 6^th overall to the San Diego Marlins. Some of the big names that came along with him to the Marlins include Oferson and Landry II. Knowing those players now it was obvious that the team was going to be something special. Over those 72 games Davis amassed 154 points and almost 120 assists to win both the scoring title and the assists title. When the season was over, he finished with a staggering +109. While the Marlins fell short in the playoffs after just 10 games, Davis managed to put up another 19 points for 1.9 pts/game. With a Boomchenko, Osborne, and Sullivan trophy under his belt, Davis was poised to enter the draft on top.

 

Strengths:

Passing – Likely the most standout and proficient passer in his draft class, Davis put up 118 assists in just 72 games. Will critics are quick to point out flaws in his defensive game, no one can knock his prowess while manning the puck in the offensive zone. His strength in the VHL will be his immediate ability to slot into either of the powerplays on his team and start producing.

 

Vision and Game Sense – Will a buzz word for some, it’s undeniable that Roque has an elite tier sense of the game. The only thing that stands out above his passing is his ability to setup and find the pass. He is also able to read the play and get himself in the right position in both the offensive and defensive zones.

 

Weaknesses:

Shot Accuracy – Even though he managed to get 36 tucks in his standout season, Davis will require a lot of work on picking his shot placement if he wants to become a bigger threat in the offensive zone. With 340 shots on the season he is moving up with a 10.6% shooting percentage that will have to get into the teens. Shot volume on the other hand, isn’t a problem.

 

Physicality – Although Roque is by no means a small defender, his defensive strategy is based more on positioning than muscling out the opposition. To be a truly stand out defenseman Davis will have to work on developing a way of throwing the body without sacrificing any of his defense prowess. That will round out his defensive play.

 

Overall:

Roque is going to be able to slot directly into his VHL teams lineup and make an impact, should be selected within the first 3 picks.
