His family was a huge hockey family with his distant cousins Jacob Smith and Willy memelander both being drafted into the VHL he felt he had a lot to live up to.

In juniors he was drafted by the Acadie Bathurst Titans 5th overall having put up 70 points in 29 games played in bantam.
In his first season with the Titan the team was led by him and the teams goaltender Gabriel Parè the two were longtime friends. Dan’s rookie season went as expected, him putting up astonishing numbers with 60 goals and 40 assists in a 40 game season that was cut short due to injuries. In the playoffs that year Dan missed game one with injury and was held to 3 goals in 3 games getting swept in the first round.

In his Second season the Titan acquired a Russian playmaker nobody had ever heard of. The two put up record breaking numbers

Dan with a stat line of 80 goals and 50 assists for 130 points in 68 games. That year he led the team to a league leading 55 wins and another trip to the playoffs.

In the playoffs Dan led his team right through to the finals only losing one game

so in 13 games played he had 25 goals and 20 assists for 45 points. In the finals they played the Halifax Mooseheads, Halifax put up a strong fight but ultimately lost in game 6. Dan being held to 5 goals and 1 assist in the series.

Bathurst would be hosting the Memorial cup that year, the teams in would be the Erie otters of the OHL, the Winnipeg Ice of the WHL and the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL and the Titans as the host.
Dan and the Titan plowed through every team except Halifax being beat 1-0 by the Mooseheads. Dan scored 5 goals and 0 assists throughout the round robin, and the team knew it would be a rematch between the Mooseheads and the Titans

The championship game, Dan played a more team friendly game then what he would usually play. Through the first period the game was scoreless both teams held to only 5 shots on net, early in the second period Dan came flying down the wing snapping a shot low for a rebound. The puck flew right to the stick of his Russian teammate who buried the puck without a thought, 1-0 lead. Midway through the second the opposing team scores a floater from the blue line, Parè screened couldn’t make the easy stop.

Late in the second the Titan break into the zone with Dan on the top of the circle, a pass comes to Dan who blasts it towards the net. “A MIRACULOUS SAVE!” The goalie sprawling across the crease flashing the leather keeping the game 1-1 the buzzer sounds and Dan is shocked.
Third period stars Dan asks to sit for a minute or so still trying to wrap his head around the save. Halifax off the very first draw goes down and scores off a 2 on 0 taking the lead. With 10 minutes left in the game Dan receives a perfect breakout pass to send him in on a break away. Dan not being much of a deker shoots the puck blocker side right below the blocker “TING” “POST AND IN HES TIED THE GAME!!”  Time goes by with Halifax sending barrages of shots onto Parè getting nothing by him. With 50 seconds left of the game score tied at 2 Dan sets out to finish off Halifax. Puck drops in the Titans end Halifax wins the draw and moves the puck around at the point shooting and picking it up. “Oh my! Another shot! PARÈ IS STANDING ON HIS HEAD!” They take another shot now 20 seconds left Dan blocks it and it fires out of the zone, Dan flies past everyone and goes in on the breakaway, everyone expecting him to shoot it. He slows down just a little bit 3 seconds left he goes to his forehand  “PETER FORSBERG IS IN THE HOUSE!” With one second on the clock he wins the game. Celebrations commence.

Dan had done what he wanted to do in the Q now his goal was to go to the VHLM. Signed to a 1 year deal by the Kings now On the Minnesota Storm
