Caitlyn was getting ready for the draft, she had heard from several teams now that had an interest in her. She was genuinely starting to get excited. Of course something was bound to happen then that would ruin everything, and if something was going to ruin everything for Caitlyn it was bound to be her mother. She got a call late in the evening a couple of days before the draft on her home phone. They didn’t say who they were but they opened by congratulating her on her success and the fact that she was about to be drafted to play in the minors. Caitlyn was immediately suspicious, what was this, an agent trying to pitch her? The caller then made it clear that they were nothing nearly so innocuous as an annoying agent. They asked how Phyllis was doing. Caitlyn immediately hung up. Then her cell phone rang. When she answered the same voice said that it was no use, they had already found her. She’d be paying her mother’s debt now that she had hit it big, with interest. Caitlyn protested, she had nothing to do with her mother, she hadn’t even talked to the woman in years and besides her minor league contract wasn’t going to pay hardly anything! The voice on the other end of the line just laughed. He told her that they didn’t want to bleed her dry, they just wanted a cut of her contracts until the debt was paid, and maybe a favor or two. They couldn’t do anything about the fact that her own mother had sold her down the river after all, they were honest business men who just had to recoup their losses. Caitlyn understood what the unsaid threat was. Honest business men who had to recoup their losses…or else. She was trapped. She had no choice but to do what they said. She’d already tried to go to the police with no success, and she had no one else to turn to. Her mother had totally screwed her over.
