Simply put, you cannot talk about the Season 40 VHL Entry Draft without bringing up the name Mason Richardson. For his first seasons in the VHL, he was the backbone to the Cologne Express' blue line and provided solidity on the back end for them. Coming into a rookie campaign as a defenseman can prove difficult, but Mason wasn't any worse for wear. In Season 40, Richardson scored 30 goals and helped on 68 assists for a whopping 98 points as a defender. He only lost out on the Stolzschweiger Rookie of the Year Trophy to his fellow Season 40 draftee and teammate, Thomas O'Malley, who was featured in the previous edition of this article. Season 40 wasn't for the Express though as they were swept in four in the post-season, and it was on to the next one. In Season 41, Mason followed up his stellar first season with another great one, although with lesser numbers. He scored 20 goals(10 less than S40), and had 59 assists for 79 points in total on a more balanced Cologne squad that wasn't so demanding of Richardson with their growing players. That season wasn't the best outcome either though, as they were taken out in 5 playoff games. It was the next season that everyone knows by now which was the Express' best. Mason Richardson had even worse numbers during the season there, with 21 goals and 50 assists for 71 points. Things were seemingly getting more difficult as their conference was getting stronger. In that post-season though, Mason Richardson and the Cologne Express went on to win the Continental Cup as the Season 42 Champions. Richardson managed 18 points in 16 playoff games. This past off-season though, he was traded over to the HC Davos Dynamo, who are on the up rise themselves, and currently has 46 points in 54 games.

Tyler Cote - 3rd Overall

Ah, Tyler Cote. With the way the Toronto Legion has been the past few seasons, it is not hard to overlook this player. That would be a mistake though. Cote was the S39 Yzerman Trophy winner as the VHLM's top two-way player after all. Tyler went straight into the VHL in Season 40, and managed to score 29 goals and have 35 assists with 64 points. Not only that, but he had a huge 329 hits in his first season, showing himself as a force on the ice. In his sophomore season, he greatly raised his game and scored 30 goals this time, with 55 assists giving him 85 points, including 404 hits. Last season in Season 42 though, that was where his best season was. In that season, he scored 35 goals and managed 51 assists, raising his output to 86 points, setting a new level for himself. He even put forward 11 game winning goals. In that post-season, which was Cote's first, he produced 6 points in 5 games, although was outed in those 5 by the New York Americans. Now in this current Season 43 campaign, his game seems to have dropped off a little bit. He has earned 20 goals and 32 assists, giving him 52 points in 54 games. It is unlikely that he will reach that 35 goal and 86 point mark with only 18 games to go, but nevertheless he has had a fine season. The big question is whether Toronto can beat the big teams in the playoffs.

Sachimo Zoidberg - 5th Overall

Next up we take a look at the Toronto Legion's high flying right winger. Zoidberg was used to winning accolades before he even stepped onto the VHL scene. In the VHLM, he won three individual awards in Season 39 alone, winning the Sakic(VHLM MVP), Dionne(Most Points), and Esposito(Playoff MVP) trophies. Not only that, but he and his team went on to win the Season 39 Founder's Cup. Stepping up into the VHL was not a difficult task for him either, and he went on to win the Season 41 Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy as the league's top rookie with 54 goals and 57 assists, giving him a whopping 111 points. In Season 42 he went on to show the world that he was not a one-hit wonder, following up his rookie season with 47 goals and 51 assists. Although he failed to hit his 50 goal and 100 point milestones again, he still had a fantastic season in his sophomore year. In the playoffs, he scored 5 points in 5 games, losing out to the New York Americans along with his fellow Season 40 VHL draftee and Toronto teammate, Tyler Cote. So far this season, Sachimo has scored 32 goals and 37 assists for 69 points in 54 games. It is a wonder of whether or not he can soar and reach the levels of his rookie campaign with only 18 games remaining this season. Toronto will definitely need him in this season's playoffs as their x-factor.
