Amidst a disappointing S77 campaign that sees the Riga Reign still fighting for their playoff lives, the team has made a couple of moves to bail out on their big off-season acquisitions.

Sitting in 6th place as the season goes on and struggling to gain any momentum and string together wins, Riga management decided the best move for their team this year was to sell. James Rose and General Zod, acquired in the off-season to bolster their defense, were traded away ahead of the trade deadline as Riga tried to gather assets and regroup for a more serious run later on when their S75 draft core has more experience.

Rose was traded along with a 3rd round pick to Helsinki in exchange for Yuuto Kira Cloudera and a 1st round pick, while Zod was shipped to Seattle in exchange for Delving Mackey, Han Jae Kuk, and two 2nd round picks. While the deals brought back a couple of players for the Reign, the primary objective of the deals was to add a few more picks to the team’s stash while adding financial flexibility. The Reign might be facing a cap crunch in the upcoming off-season with so many players on entry-level contracts and due for a raise.

Although this season so far has been a disappointment for Riga, they are hoping to be a contender in the long term, and should still be in a position to do so if they can retain a majority of their core in the off-season ahead of S78.
