youloser1337 1,122
Prefix: This was going to be a podcast but I don’t really have any confidence in doing it so I’m just going to write it out instead. With Season 80 already in full swing, I thought it would be a good idea to recap the Mexico City Kings drafting and some other minor notes. Before the draft though, there’s a new sheriff in town with Advantage moving up to the VHLE a new GM had to be crowned. Youloser1337 was named as the new Mexico City Kings GM. With the new GM came a new spot for an AGM. That role was filled by none other than Moon. With management locked in and ready for the draft, it was only a matter of time before getting started. The draft was the first big test for the newly appointed GM. “This was my first experience drafting as a GM. In my time with Minnesota, I was mainly scouting for Laine to draft. This time I was flying solo with some help from Moon. It was very daunting but I think we handled it perfectly. I think the most challenging part of the draft was trying to execute a trade plan. Luckily, we struck gold with Minnesota and I got to complete my first trade with them.” - youloser1337 on drafting Let’s get started with the draft recap. Round 1: Pick 9 - LW - Matt Avens - 161 TPE I had Avens high on my draft board since I was in Minnesota. He was an absolute beast for us in Minnesota and I knew he would do great here in Mexico City. Also having him around in the Junior Showcase tournament showed how much the sim engine favored him. He was the perfect fit for us and my first-ever draft pick with the Mexico City Kings. Round 2: Trade! Minnesota Receives: S80 Mex 2nd - Pick 21 S80 Phi 2nd - Pick 20 S81 Mex 4th Mexico City Receives: S80 Min 2nd - Pick 14 S80 Min 3rd - Pick 26 This was my first ever trade and of course, it had to be with Minnesota. The trade talks with Laine were very fluid. My game plan for the draft was to trade up and get into the 3rd round with how deep the draft went. I had a player on my board that if I didn’t pull the trigger now I was going to lose out on him. I was messaging a bunch of GMs to move up in the draft to take this player. I’m glad it worked out in the end. Losing the 4th did sting for the cost of moving up but I think what we were able to get out of this deal made it worth it. Pick 14 - D - Wattson Power - 111 TPE With defense going very early in the draft I knew I had to trade up to get Power. The trade with Minnesota was perfect to execute that plan. Power is a great defense and will help out on the blueline with the returning player in Dookie Headtop. Having Power and Headtop as the top 2 on the blueline was going to be deadly in the league. Round 3: Pick 26 - G - Friendly Hermit - 52 TPE My greatest achievement in this draft. With goalies being a hot commodity getting Hermit was priority number 1. I worked with Hermit in the Junior Showcase and he was a great sport. He got some experience in some games and although he didn’t do great I knew he was going to be able to steal some games for us. I’m so happy I got Hermit as he is a motivated individual and has already had some success while in Mexico City. Round 4: No picks in round 4 Round 5: Pick 51 - D - Roman Von Zkikowski - 59 TPE A hidden gem in the mix was Zkikowski. I had some experience talking to Roman on the forum and even had him on my Junior Showcase team. I knew getting him was a priority and when he fell into our lap this late in the draft was perfect. Although he’s going to be alone on the blueline, for now, I’m hoping the waiver wire will bring in another D and they will get to learn the role with Roman. Round 6: Pick 69 - C - Bryan Shores - 40 TPE As I disappointed everyone for not picking a meme pick with 69, I knew I wanted to hopefully strike gold late in the draft. While it hasn’t been gold Shores is active claiming practice since being drafted. Although not in the discord I am happy that we were able to get a steal late in the draft. Round 7: Pick 81 - RW - Stanley Richard - 36 TPE The final pick in our draft was a hail mary to get an active player late. While they haven’t joined the discord they have been claiming practice since being drafted. He fits in perfectly in the 2nd line to grow and gain experience. Quality over quantity for this draft. While not having a bunch of picks like Houston or Yukon, I knew I had to draft well in this draft to be a contender. Having active players on every pick is a dream come true. It makes me confident in my scouting abilities alongside Moon. Also getting that first taste of the trade talk chaos was very exhilarating. This is something I will have to get used to but I think next season’s draft is going to be even better. Shoutout to Sam, Moon, and Alex for all hanging out on the draft night to help calm me down. Without them, I don’t know if I could have drafted so well. Game of the week Game 27 - Mexico City Kings vs. Minnesota Storm An early rivalry is forming as the newly appointed GM, youloser1337, faces off against his old team in the Minnesota Storm. Minnesota up to this point was steamrolling all of their opponents. Mexico City was coming in as the underdogs with a 1-2-1 record. Period 1: No goals A quiet period 1 for both teams. Mexico City defense was working overtime after being outshot 10 to 3. Period 2: Kings - Matt Avens 6 (Dookie Headtop 9) - 1:37 1-0 Mex Kings - Watson Stonebridge 3 - (Dookie Headtop 10, Matt Avens 5) - 1:43 2-0 Mex Kings - Watson Stonebridge 4 - (Dookie Headtop 11, Matt Avens 6) - 1:51 3-0 Mex Kings - Matt Avens 7 - (Dookie Headtop 12) - 2:13 4-0 Mex Storm - BotRW5 2 - (BotLW5 2, BotD5 2) - 6:54 - 4-1 Mex Storm - Nezuko 7 - (Barry Bonds Jr 13) - 11:42 - 4-2 Mex Storm - Norris Sirois 6 - (Nico Pearce - 14:11 - 4-3 Mex An explosive 2nd period with 7 goals scored combined. Mexico City with the early 4-0 lead but was cut all the way down to 4-3 by the end of the period. Another period where the Storm was outshooting the Kings 15 to 11. Period 3: Storm - Nico Pearce 10 - (Fredric Salo 6) - 4:06 - PP - 4-4 Tie Kings - Matt Avens 8 - (Watson Stonebridge 9, Dookie Headtop 13) - 8:27 - 5-4 Mex Storm - Nico Pearce 11 - (Norris Sirois 9) - 9:19 - 5-5 Tie Kings - Wattson Power 4 - (Watson Stonebridge 10, Dookie Headtop 14) - 16:35 - PP - 6-5 Mex The Storm manages to bring the game even early on in the period. A back and forth scoring occurs and goes quiet until the back half of the period. A costly penalty by cube whale at 15:22 in the period was the difference and the Kings pulled ahead. In a bit of irony, the trade comes back to haunt the Storm as pick 14, Wattson Power, scores the game-winning goal. The shots were even that period at 14 each. Highlights: First regulation loss for the Minnesota Storm this season Matt Avens scores a hat trick Wattson Power gets the game-winning goal Dookie Headtop gets 6 assists GM Comment: “Holy moly this was a roller coaster from the start. I knew this was going to be a tough game for us but to come out on top was just amazing. I’m super proud of the team for sticking with it and not getting overwhelmed when the Storm came back. Power getting the game-winning goal was poetic justice if you ask me.” An exciting day 1 of hockey concluded for Mexico City after that game while going 2-2-1. Wavier pickup: C - Jacker Doodle - S1aveToTheGam3 This week we said hello to Jacker Doodle! He has already picked up so much since joining the league and in the discord. Already putting in a lot of effort to claim TPE is a great sign! We are happy to have Doodle on the team. He already has 4 games of experience and 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 points. A great pickup for a hopefully deep playoff run. Conclusion Wow. What an incredible first week in the VHLM. From being hired to drafting to starting the season. This was an intense week. I can’t wait to do more though as this is just the beginning. 1510 words SpicyGecko 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/109063-mexico-city-kings-podcast-that-isnt-a-podcast/ Share on other sites
osens 297
Cool article, it felt pretty profesional and it was pretty easy to read. I liked how you added some quotes to help the text seem more like article. I would recommend for you to add some pictures, but this article was so massive, that maybe it is fine that you left out without pictures, I would have added some though. To sum up all - great work! 9.5/10 youloser1337 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/109063-mexico-city-kings-podcast-that-isnt-a-podcast/#findComment-876106 Share on other sites
Thunfish 72
Pretty cool stuff, not gonna lie. You could've just called it like "Thoughts about X" or something, not saying this as a review, just to save the need to explain why it isn't a podcast. youloser1337 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/109063-mexico-city-kings-podcast-that-isnt-a-podcast/#findComment-876136 Share on other sites
SpicyGecko 100
Well written and well formatted. Easy and fun read. A little bit could’ve been added to tell us where the quote came from. Nice breakdown of the draft picks and what was going through your head. Also enjoyed the game of the week. Overall good write-up. 8/10 youloser1337 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/109063-mexico-city-kings-podcast-that-isnt-a-podcast/#findComment-876241 Share on other sites
