A tale of two Brothers // Settling in

The Jansers had a busy time since our last article and played 6 games in the interim. They played Rush, Storm, Hounds, Aces, Marlins and Halifax.

The first game was against the Yukon outfit and ended with a 8-2 win for the Rush. The Alaskan team won the first and second period with 1-0 each. At 5:30 minutes into the third, during a powerplay, Marcel scored with one of his meanwhile feared slapshots from the point to make the game 2-1. Yukon drew one back, also in powerplay at 9:54 minutes. Not a minute later Bernier scored the 3-2 and kept his colours in the game. Unfortunately, Hogan with another ppg and Corvo sealed the deal for the Rush. Philadelphia gave the game away in the special teams as power play (1/7) and box play (2/4) were not up to their usual standards and against the best team in the league, this is a killer. The Reapers did a lot of things right, mind you. They played a neat defensive game for the two first periods and provoked a lot of penalties. Consequently, they gave Yukon a run for their money. Alas, this time it was not enough to come out victorious. They were not helped by the fact that Des Aves had one of his weaker days with only .833 saving rate (his average for the reapers is .887) and was bested by Price with .895. The three stars were Corvo (1g/1a), Commodus (1/0) and Mulds (1g/1a).

Daniel was more discrete with 0g, 0a and a -1 rating

 

The second game was against Minnesota with the final score being 3-2 for the Reapers. The Philadelphian won the first period 2-1, with Simeoni and Daniel (in power play) being the scorers. Daniel created traffic in the slot and deflected Jones' shot. The second period went 1-0 to the Reapers (Sanderson scoring the goal in power play with Iaxazaluoh making the final pass). Salo scored late in the third to catch up to 3-2 but there was not enough time left on the clock for the Minnesota team to score the equalizer. Des  Aves redeemed himself and saved .946 of the shots fired at him, while Grubauer only saved  .824, which was not enough to drag his team to a win. The Storm even pulled their goalie with 39 seconds left in the period, but to no avail.  The Reapers' power play was better (2/9) than in the previous game and so was the penalty killing (4/5). The three stars went to Sanderson (1g/0a) gwg, Des Aves (35/37 shots saved) and Daniel (1g/0a).

The next game was against the Janser's old team, the Hounds and the Reapers came out triumphant with 7-4. The Canadian team came out of the locker room on fire and scored the first goal only 22 seconds into the game after 2 seconds of power play, hardly enough time for the umpire to drop the puck. The first period was fought with open sights in general as it ended 3-2 with the Hounds scoring the first and the last goal of the period (both in power play) and the Reapers scoring three unanswered goals (2 x Bernier, 1 x Jp). In the second period the Pennsylvanian had three consecutive goal with Daniel scoring two back-to-back goals (each time assisted by Jones and Iaxazaluoh). The goals were basically carbon copies of each other, a perfect transition on the rush, with Dan finding the holes (5 hole in the first attempt and above the blockers on the far post in the second). Marcel also contributed to the third Reapers goal in that period by setting up Mursu with a Hail Mary pass for his goal. The Hounds fought back however and score two unanswered goals, but Powers with his third goal of the season suffocated the last hope the Mississaugans had to win a point. All is not peachy though. The Reapers allowed three goals on five penalty kill situations and only scored on one out of four power plays. Luckily, they were the better team by a country mile on even strength (6-1). Both goalies were not performing to their standards with a .826 (Des Aves) and .788 (Mississauga) saving rate respectively. Daniel was named Player of the Match with 2g/0a (one of which the game winner) with Bernier (2g/0a) and Mursu (1g/1a) following suit.

We asked Daniel what it felt like to be named first star against his former team. Said Daniel: 'You don't think at such things at all during a match. The coach defines a role for you which you dispose of to the best of your abilities. Apparently this was good enough tonight to be named First Star. Then it dawned on me and it felt awkward. But @N0HBDY even texted me and congratulated me to my performance. I replied that I wish it was not against them and wished him and the team best of luck (just not against us). So there is no bad blood between us. We all know that these things can happen in sports in general and hockey in particular and I think the Hounds' fans and staff would think worse of me, had I not given my all.'

 

After their win against the Hounds it was time to face the Las Vegas Aces, which on this occasion appeared more like Queens, as the Nevada team lost clearly 6-2. The Reapers let no doubt of who the better team was that night and scored five consecutive goals. The Jansers contributed two (Dan) and one (Marcel) assists to the result. Had the Philadelphian power play not been practically inexistent (only 1/12), they could have racked up a cricket score. The penalty kill was adequate with 4/5. Des Aves was clearly better than his adversary Blanchette with .882 vs .818 saving rate. To absolutely no-one's surprised the three stars were monopolized by the East Coast team with Simeoni (3g/0a) Hattrick and game winner congratulations!, Bernier (1g/3a) and Ayodele (0g/2a).

Daniel logged 0g, 2a, +0, 4 hits and 4 PIM (Hooking and Holding each, none of which led to a goal against)

 

Next up were the Marlins and again the Reapers proved to be the better team, though by the tiniest of margins (3-2 final score). The first period ended 0-0, the second with 2-2, each team scoring back to back goals. Daniel (together with Jones) assisted on Moinet first goal of the season for the 1-0 lead in power play. In the third period, it was Daniel who scored the gwg with 1:59 minutes left in the game. Byrne was called off the ice for an additional attacker, but on his way to the bench, Iaxazaluoh won the puck relayed it to Jones who one-touched it to Dan. He saw the vacant goal and the scrambling netminder who desperately tried to reach the crease again and lobbed the puck and luckily he was true on target and the puck just dropped enough to make it under the crossbar. For once, both goalies showed a good performance (Des Aves .905, Byrne .914 saving rate). And also both special teams were decent with 3/3 for the pk and 1/5 for the power play formation. The three stars were Jones (1g/2a), Wilk (1g/1a) and Xavier (1g/0a).

All good things must end and so logically the Reapers lost their sixth and final game (of this article of course) with 4-2. For once, neither of the Jansers were on the score board (not even for penalties). Bernier and Simeoni scored for the Philadelphians. While Des Aves' performance was not bad (.852) Tsezar's was better (.900). The Reapers' power play was weak (0/7) while their penalty killing was flawless (4/4). One could imagine that a better goalie performance as well as a more efficient power play would have tipped the scales into the Reapers' favour. The three start were made up from Yrwy (0g/3a), Von Strangle (1g/1a) and Doe (2g/0a).

To the shots blocked: with Iaxazaluoh (96) and Marcel (100, on tied first in the league) only being four blocked shots apart, the bets in the team are off as to who will win this contest. We think whoever blocks more shots, the winner clearly is Des Aves as the two defenders strive to outsuffer the other one while putting their bodies in harms way.
