Analysis of VHLW South Team Name: Auckland

Recommended Posts

The main city in New Zealand is Auckland. Auckland has an urban population of about 1,463,000 individuals, making it the most populous urban area in the country. It ia city with diverse city with 31 persent Asian population and the largest Polynesian population in the world. The British colony was established in 1840 and was named for George Eden, Earl of Auckland, British First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1865, Auckland was replaced by Wellington as the capital, but continues to grow even today. One of Auckland's nicknames, the "City of Sails", comes from the 135,000 yachts and launches are registered here. Auckland has many sports teams including three members of the NZIHL. They are the West Auckland Admirals, the Botany Swarm, and the Auckland Mako, who were founded in 2021. To continue the 16 year legacy of hockey in Auckland, the VHLW would add the Auckland Moa. The Moa were multiple species of now-extinct flightless birds endemic to New Zealand. The largest birds were about 3.6 meters or 12 feet in height with the neck outstretched, and weighed about 230 kg or 510 pounds. Big birds indeed. Much like the dodo, the arrival of Polynesians to New Zealand sometime before 1300 sealed the Moa's fate. By 1445, the Moa were no more. It is often listed alongside the dodo as a leading candidate for de-extinction by cloning. Having the iconic birds serve as a team name would revive them in spirt and perhaps appeal to the Polynesian population.
