Word in Karlstad, Sweden today is that 20-year-old centre Joachim Bryngelson will be leaving the Farjestad J20 program effective immediately, heading to North America in pursuit of a VHL career. Bryngelson was expected to play on the first line for the Farjestad J20 squad this year and possibly have an outside shot at cracking Sweden’s roster for the IIHF U20 championships. However, he will instead opt for a change in his hockey career after spending five years in his hometown team’s junior program.

Bryngelson is a supremely talented skater, effective passer and two-way forward though there are questions about his long-term offensive upside, especially if he does not develop a more effective shot. He’ll need some work on his face-offs as well if he’s going to stick at the centre position. VHLM scouts have indicated that with the current preference for shot-first players, Bryngelson may have some trouble adjusting to the league. Despite the question marks, he is a talented player who may find a way.

Bryngelson’s agent has indicated that several VHLM teams have contacted him and that a decision will be made on his client’s short-term future this week. He also said that Bryngelson’s main priorities in picking a team are more about the opportunity to play in a system and with linemates that will give him an opportunity to succeed than anything else, but declined to comment on which teams were his primary options.
