Traveling History with William Groves Part 3: Around Bratislava

Recommended Posts

It is time for the third article of this series of travel and history blogs. VHLE play has started up and things are going well for the Watchmen. Given that things have now gotten into a pattern, I feel it is time to about my second home during the season. Bratislava is a great place. Ny father loved Austria after spending time there as a young man, and I feel myself falling in love with the next country over. Bratislava is not a big city. It feels like the small communities I grew up in back home, but everyone has more money. Being able to ply my craft in a tourists destination is cool. I live in an apartment just outside of the Old Town and my favorite activity when not playing hockey is to stroll the cobblestone streets perusing the shops and stopping for a drink at a café. Many of the building here come from the 1300's or older, so there is much history here.  Another one of my favorite places is the UFO Tower, a tower that looks like an alien vessel at the top. The views at the top are amazing and the restaurant and bar make it a good  place to get away from everything. Other interesting locations include the inverted pyramid headquarters of Slovak Radio and the  Kamzik TV Tower, both of which I have done interviews in. There is also my place of work,The Onderj Nepela Winter Sports Stadium, and many other park and interesting locations. I see why many view Bratislava as a underrated tourist destination. A good amount of history, small town atmosphere and majestic mountain views make Bratislava a great place to get away from the big crowds and chill. I am lucky to be here.
