I really have no statistical evidence to back this, because after all this is a vhl.com article and quite frankly I’m just going to assume I’m right until someone proves me wrong, but I feel like overall, save percentage, and thus shooting percentage has far less range as it used to. The difference between the surprising team leading in shooting percentage (Toronto) and the utterly abysmal Prague group is only 2.54%, and even TOR seems like an outlier, a whole .34% higher than the second place team, Helsinki.

What I did notice however is there seems to be a pretty clear dividing line between playoff team shooting percentages and non-playoff team shooting percentages. Seems like the cut-off is roughly 7.5%, with 8/10 playoff teams hitting that threshold, everyone except the incredibly strange Warsaw Predators and the young Davos team, who miss that threshold by .08%.

Warsaw’s shooting percentage seems to be yanked down by Hari Singh Nalwa who I would have expected to have roughly double the goals they have given the shot totals.

Davos has the young trio of Siyan Yasilievich, Napolean Dynamite and Jake Thunder who cannot seem to put the puck in the net, although aren’t trying nearly as hard as Nalwa.

What has been really interesting to me, however, has been Calgary (of course), where every defenseman has below 6% shooting this season so far, despite the lowest forward being just below 8%. Poor GoodBrandSun is shooting 2.78% so far despite the incredible rookie season. Hopefully that means a burst of goalscoring from the back end is due for Calgary.

Is it all that close? 2.54% is the difference between your SV% being .900 and (over) .925. That's pretty significant when you look at it from the goaler perspective.

Granted I'm too lazy to look into it too, but I'm not surprised.

It most certainly was yesterday and I thought exactly the same thing, crazy how close it all is but how spread it CAN appear if you just look at it from another angle
