REIGN HOLD TRYOUTS FOR DEFENSEMEN

Through seventeen games in Season 40, the Riga Reign have earned eighteen points, which puts them in a tie for third place in the European Conference with the Cologne Express. While this isn’t necessarily a bad spot to be in at this point in the season, there is a somewhat alarming trend with the team from game to game: they give up too many goals. Their forty-three goals against this season are two more than the next closest team in playoff position. With a save percentage of .919, goaltender Szatkowski Jr. appears to have done an average at worst job so far this season. However, when you break down many of his goals against individually, a good portion of them come when VHL veteran defensemen RIG D1 and RIG D2 are on the ice. While D1 and D2 are positive members in the locker room, their on-ice skills leave just a little to desire. The fact that after forty seasons, these two players can’t keep a starting position speaks volumes. As a result, General Manager Jim Gow is holding open tryouts to anyone interested in the upcoming week.

“While this may seem like a crazy plan, coming from Philadelphia, we have one of the best examples of this situation,” added Gow. “While the movie Invincible may have exaggerated some of his details, Vince Papale was able to walk onto the Philadelphia Eagles as a special teams player and ended up being an extremely important contributor to the football team. We’re pretty much looking for the same thing; someone who can just hold their own for a couple minutes a game.”

In a statement given to the media shortly after Gow’s announcement, RIG D2 commented, “Obviously RIG D1 and I are disappointed, but we understand where the boss is coming from. We’re here to help out whatever way we can, but we’d like some ice time. Yeah, we may play more than most of our peers in similar situations, but we don’t think we’re that bad.”

Fan support on this issue seems to me mixed. On one hand, a large portion of the fan base understand that in order to improve the team, an upgrade has to be made on the blue line, and RIG D1 and RIG D2 are the easiest targets. On the other hand, a small but significant portion of supporters are upset over the mistreatment of the long standing members of the Reign. While this has led to the typical #FreeRIGD on twitter, the team’s public relations department is not yet sure if this treatment of the players will result in a loss of fan support. But GM Gow doesn’t really care, because he knows the truth: these players are truly awful.
