The Start

Growing up in Arizona, hockey isn’t always the first choice for a 6-year-old kid. Most are outside playing baseball or inside playing basketball – with little advertisement for the only contact sport played on ice. Jimi Jax doesn’t fall under the category of those kids – in fact, hockey was the only sport he experienced as a young kid. Shortly after he started kindergarten, his parents invested in a sports bar – a place Jax liked to visit often when allowed. Weekdays after school would be the only time his parents would let Jax hang out at the bar growing up – which happened to be prime time for VHL games to get released. From the get-go, Jax fell in love with the sport of hockey and that’s where his dream of being a VHL player started.

The Discovery

The hockey program in Grand Falls was not as prominent was the ones you would find in the northern U.S.  There weren’t many and the closest one to the Jax family was a 40-minute drive. Jax parents knew his interest was genuine and decided to promise to take him to at least 5 skates to see if he would like to play. They expected all 5 to be strictly learning to skate – and of course 100% the first two were. The third one – however, was the first time the coach let him hold a hockey stick as his skating level improved. On the 4th and 5th skate – Jax was carrying the puck up the ice and joining the group of players that were at least on their second year.

The quick learning and love for the game left Jax parents with no choice but to register him in for the entire year. They would take turns driving him to hockey – still 40 minutes away – but knew that the early level skill he developed could turn into something much more. Jax was dominating his level and was moved up with he U10s for an even playfield. He still led in scoring during the group scrimmage matches with at least 5 goals a game. It wasn’t unusual to see a player dominate their age group around this area – but it was extremely rare to see a player become the best in a higher age group. Over a year and a half – the self-taught development turned into a legitimate talent that had scouts within the USNDTP stopping in town to see the phenom.

The Rise

By age 10, the signs were there that Jax was going to turn into something great and was invited to the U13 US developmental camp. Coming out of nowhere, he was not considered a high-end recruit at the time and normally played on the 4th line in scrimmages. It wasn’t until an intra-squad game halfway through the year where he went toe-to-toe with the top recruit (Oreo McFleury) in the nation, sharing 4 goals a piece – the only difference was that he only played 10 minutes to McFleury’s 20. As the games went on after that throughout the season – Jax would make his way all the way up the lineup. In the first 20 games – Jax registered 5 goals and 2 assists logging an average of 8 minutes of ice time. The following 20 – 10 goals and 15 assists. It was the tail end of this season that Jax put his name on the national map – and the VHL was in his future.Jax dominated the U13s for another season after that – he, along with the McFleury triplets, were known to be the best in the country – up until Mac Atlas crashed down into the earth,or however he became a player.  Once the U16 age group started to take form – scouts within the VHL started to show up to see “five of the top 10 players in the S87 draft class”.

Jax spent the majority of his U16 career playing 2nd line center to McFleury with the UNSTPD National Team. The both tallied 100+ point seasons within their intra-league and intra-squad games over the course of a 2-year 60 game period. The U18 years was where Jax really established himself as an elite prospect – sharing minutes as the top line center and crushing the 2-year record with 297 points – 170 of them goals. In addition to the strong performance offensively – Jax was also heavily relied on defensively and established a strong two-way game. When asked about the type of player he envisioned himself as – he thinks of Scott Boulet, a strong two-way player who has his own trophy.

The Draft

The everyday life of Jax involves playing hockey, training for hockey – and talking about hockey – mostly with recruiters and scouts across different hockey leagues. Regardless of who spoke to him – he has his eyes set for the VHL. Jax is overwhelmed with the attention he’s getting from teams – and was hearing rumors of becoming a Top 3 Pick.
