Closing in on the midway point of Season 40, it has been a wild ride thus far. There have certainly been a lot of surprised but one of the big ones may be the performance of Helsinki Titans defenseman Don Draper. A rookie last season, Draper was highly touted before the season began as one of the more highly skilled rookies and was a favorite for the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy, awarded to the leagues top rookie. However, upon his entrance to the league, his performance was 'disappointing', at best.

S39 Regular Season:
72GP / 23G / 29A / 52P / -39 / 33H

As you can see by the stats above, his stats were certainly dismal. Both Draper, the Titans, and the fans were quite disappointed by this result. However, so far this season, Draper has really turned his play around. Here are his S40 statistics thus far:

S40 Regular Season:
30GP / 6G / 30A / 36P / +29 / 5H

Maybe it was the addition of veteran talent in Willem Janssen and Damon Tyrael, or maybe it was his off-season training, but it's clear that Don Draper has made vast improvements over the course of a season. He is now one of the top defenseman in the league, and is a strong contender for the Dustin Funk Trophy, which is awarded to the player deemed Most Improved. However, I feel like I've been talking about Draper too much in this article. He's truly just a scrub, so let's talk about the rest of the team.

The Titans in general have been performing fantastically so far this season, as they now actually lead the league, just one point ahead of the Americans. Now, there has been arguments that the Titans have had a comparatively easy schedule so far, which may be true, but the Titans are still showing a great improvement from last season. The addition of Janssen and Tyrael has proved to be a great addition to the roster, with Tyrael totalling 45 points and Janssen  39, through 30 games. Obviously, it's unfortunate that they will be departing at the end of the season, but it will be interesting to see if the Titans pick up more talent this off-season.

The Titan's rookies have also been performing well so far this season, with James Faraday racking up 23 points so far, and defensive giant King Czar scaring the shit out of his opponents. With the pending departure of first line defensemen Vojczeck Svoboda at the end of the season, Czar is looking to step up and take on a bigger role within the organization. Although his presence and dedication has been questioned, Titan goaltender Kimmo Salo has remained un-phased by the speculation about his role with Helsinki, as he currently holds a 1.54 GAA and 0.922 SV%.
