PSA After a Hard Week

Some of you know, but most don't, that my mother passed away. I've shared before that things between her and I have always been complicated, but that doesn't make what happened any less difficult. I found out on Monday, April 17th that my mother died. From that point, until Thursday evening I was having to scramble together money to pay for the funeral and headstone (she had no assets so it falls on my brother and me), find a funeral home, find a cemetery (she didn't own a plot), and handle a lot of the background things such as bank accounts, social security, and so on. Then, on Friday, we held her service.

 

Needless to say, this last week sucked. And, likely, this coming week will be just as hard as I now have time to sit and think.

 

I felt that it was important to put out a reminder because we often don't think of these things until it's too late. No matter who you are, have an open and honest discussion with whoever your next of kin is about what you'd like to have done. If you are an adult, look into where you want to be buried (if you are doing that) and which funeral home you'd like to handle everything. Look into creating a will and giving power and authority over your assets and property to someone you trust (spouse, significant other, parents, etc...) Invest in final expense insurance (otherwise you'll be doing a GoFundMe to afford the funeral and associated costs like we're doing). If you are a kid still, have these conversations with your parents or guardian. Ask them what they want and tell them what you want. Don't wait on these things.
