Philly Does It

PHILADELPHIA - Let’s rewind a few days ago - the Reapers were down 3 games to 1 in the series against the 101-point Mexico City Kings, arguably the best team throughout the regular season of the VHLM. The team easily could have mailed it in and not have been up to the challenge, but this team has heart. Philly took game’s five and 6 in dramatic fashion and headed to Mexico City for a championship deciding Game 7.

Game Rewind

Dominik Kopecky got on the board first with a PP goal late in the first to put the Reapers up 1 going into the second period, but Mexico City answered early 47 seconds into the second period to tie it. The teams traded chances back and forth throughout the second period, but the Reapers would find the next goal. Eric Queefson, the top prospect in the S89 VHL draft, would find the back of the twine on a powerplay goal late in the second period with a rocket slap shot top shelf. The Reapers had 20 minutes to lock it down and win the championship.

The third period saw a lot of pressure from Mexico City early but goaltender Jeffrey Blake stood tall. The Reapers largely played a solid defensive period but took a costly penalty late in the period when Zyn Westwood got two minutes for holding (nice penalty bitch). Halfway through the ensuing powerplay, the Kings tied the game up and sent it to overtime.

Game 7 overtime for a Founder’s Cup – is there anything better? The majority of the extra frame was evenly played. Shots and scoring chances were even throughout the period, but all it took was one powerplay chance for the Reapers to take home the title. A breakout playoff performer, Anthony Simmons would score the championship winning goal with just 20 seconds remaining in overtime. That’s it, the Philadelphia Reapers are the S88 Founders Cup Champions.
